Tax purposes while you're prepping or testing driving a car you are planning retailing.
Not sure how strict they are but a young lad near me has been running trade plates on a fiesta ST for months. Business must be slow if he's using them on the same motor for 3-4 months. I suspect he's taking the piss and using them just to save a few hundred quid on his personal car but how much interest DVLA take and how they prove it is another thing.

Were you also taught to stop cars being driven with trade plates not located correctly?Just up the road from where I live, we have the following Main Dealerships: Honda, Toyota, VW/Audi, Hyundai and Isuzu.
Apparently, the sales staff at all the dealerships have been trained to just throw the front trade plate on the dashboard, and hang the rear plate off the rear screen wiper, just above/below the vehicle's actual registration plate, or if there isn't a rear wiper, throw it on the rear parcel shelf.

Never bothered with them and never had an issue...ever...
I spent about 7 years running stock cars to and from work, usually with a trade plate haphazardly chucked onto the dash. Wasn't stopped once, didn't receive any hits from the motorway ANPR for tax and I only ever lost one plate. Motor trade victory? (not condoning it, but trust me, it's par for the course)
They certainly have tightened up on misuse of trade plates ,dealers using them just for running to and from home and social use have in some cases had the plates removed from them .
They also have cracked down on those with expired plates .
Some old boys even think they can run their knackered old recovery vehicle on Trade Plates ,just like the old days .
