Was I driving without insurance?

Last April I got pinched for driving my Lotus without insurance (was taking from storage back home). The car was impounded and I got a £600 fine, some points and IN10 conviction. However, at the time I owned a BMW and was insured fully comp which allowed me to drive another car 3rd party insured. Should I have received the conviction, as I had insurance to drive the car, even in the car itself didn't have insurance?

This. Not belonging to, hired to, or leased by.Failure of the registered keeper to have the car either SORNed or insured at any one time - breaching Continuous Insurance Enforcement - is a separate offence, £100 fixed penalty but no points.

What did your policy say?What did the insurance company say when you called them to clarify before driving your Lotus?

You'll need to check your BMW insurance policy's fine print. For example, here's the relevant section from Admiral's motor insurance policy booklet:

As its already been pointed out, you can't use drive other cars (DOC) cover if you own both cars. Some polices say that they wont cover cars in the same household or owned by your partner etc. Some also say that the car itself has to have a policy in place. There are some that don't (LV springs to mind) but most that I've dealt with require the car to be insured outright.
Bit odd that you are only thinking of this now mind you.

Yes.The clause (which isn’t on all policies) is there to allow you to drive another persons car in otherwise unusual circumstances. For example, they break their leg on holiday and you drive home from the airport.
My policy wording when I have checked has always insisted that the other car is also insured. I have always rightly or wrongly assumed that is to stop me from registering a sports car like a Lotus in a friends name and driving it on a much cheaper Aygo insurance policy.

To echo what others have said, this is the case. I actually did break my leg while skiing and a mate had to drive my car home from Gatwick. Due to slight repatriation issues, my car actually got home before I did.GingerMunky said:
