Feel free to move if wrong forum

Just cracked a spring, I've replaced it with a lowered one because the OEM ones are hens teeth, so nearside front is an eiback lowered, and offside front is normal OEM. Looking at the VOSA guidance, it doesn't look like it's a reason to fail - any one able to confirm?

Running quite close and very busy so if I can get away with leaving it for a bit then it helps! TIA

How obvious is the difference in ride height on that corner?

It's only 50mm so not too different, but the aftermarker is bright red, and very obviously different!

I knew I'd seen an ask an MOT tester thread somewhere - have just copied to that thread. Cheers

OK I'll ask. Why would you have mismatched springs especially on the fronyt axle which deals with the steering and most of the braking of the vehicle???? Just change both.

I've got 50mm lowering springs on my T6 and it's night and day difference, it will look really odd if only 1 is changed

Surely you are not asking this question seriously?

50mm = 2 inches difference in spring length = just no.

Yep I know it's not ideal. It's a clio 182 and I could not find new OE springs at all. The car hardly going to be driven, I'm just very busy and if I can put it through the MOT and get it done later, it helps me out a lot.

So other than people ragging on the concept of a lowered car, is this an MOT fail? biggrin

Could be construed as an unsafe modification. A major, the same as a broken spring

If you were unfortunate enough to be involved in an incident your insurance company and a vehicle examiner might take the view that the modification has made the handling unsafe.

Plus the car is now modified & you should inform your insurers of the modification. They may well take the view that the modification as far as they are concerned is unsafe & decline cover.

Your choice.

In another thread someone is stressing over 8mm difference on an Audi TT he's just bought.

Legally - I've no idea, but it bloody should be.

(Sorry I'm not very helpful - but I'm just staggered that anyone would ask such a question, let alone actually do it!)

Are they really hens teeth? Euros seem to have them in stock. Who buys just one lowering spring? Buy a pair so they are matched across the axle, I am not an MOT inspector but I really hope they would fail you for this.

Yep I know it's not an idea situation, but the car is parked on the road, and I am away for a week when the MOT expires. I'm very busy and don't have a chance to do the other side. Car won't be driven, it's just so the DVLA don't clamp it while I'm away and I can do it when I'm back (and they have been clamping in my area!)

Y'all seem really hung up on how stupid it is. I agree. It won't be driven, and I have the rest of the springs to fit. But this is just to keep the clamp off it as I have run out of time. It's certainly better than the no spring that was on it when it shattered the other day!

Great when turning right. Not so good turning left...

Whether it's an MOT fail or not, it might still make the car unroadworthy.
MOT doesn't presume to test every possible thing that could make a car unsafe.

Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if it made no difference at all to the handling, nor would I be surprised if it headed for the first ditch.
