As ever I’m intrigued by (and suspicious of) the specific wording of statements, questions and options for answers in these consultations.

It’s also quite interesting to note the premise is decreasing car limits wrapped together with increasing freight vehicle limits. I’m rather suspicious of the idea behind bundling those two together as well!

Some of the questions in the consultation response are incredibly leading.

Why is there either a 'improve' or 'make worse' and no 'make no difference' option when rating the impacts the changes would have? You can only select 'unsure' which is certainly not my view on the matter.

Most single carriageway roads in oxfordshire are 50 or less. Mind you, at least it gives more time to dodge the potholes.

"Consultation" in this context means it's already been decided that this is happening, make no mistake about it.

They did a "consultation" about the 20MPH nonsense in Wales and it was wildly unpopular. They did it anyway.

Why don't they reduce the speed limit in accident blackspots. There is one stretch of road I drive between the Erskine Bridge and Dumbarton, it's NSL dual carriageway, so 70mph, with an unprotected pavement on the left and narrow lanes. It's also really bad for standing water, always amazed me it's a 70mph stretch.

I have been told that reducing single carriageway speed limits from NSL to 50 saved a fortune in Gloucestershire as the maintenance requirement are not as tight. They could be trying to use safety as a way of saving cash.

Great opportunity to tax the motorist with speeding fines too as one of the questions is to keep all current speed detection systems in place with the lower limits.

As noted elsewhere on PH on other topics, if this is a "consultation" then it's a done deal and no amount of signing up or protesting will change that. IME on several different "consultations", they never, ever find in the interests of those opposing the proposal.

Happy to be proven wrong when they announce the results but history and experience will suggest that unless another government/public body (police, etc) kyboshes it, it'll go through.
