So mistakes have been happening since 2021 and to correct it they'll refund the fines and clear any points.

I doubt this will fly as premiums will have gone up too, how will they compensate for that?

This is like those stories where the council comes along and changes the parking regulations where you are parked legally, and then issues you a ticket.

So there you are, doing 70, they change the limit to 60, and then instantly fine you for speeding.

The term for this is a 's trick.

This is the bit that I found interesting

“Meanwhile, police forces have stopped issuing fines from variable cameras until they have confidence in their accuracy.”

I read that one - however, I still wouldn’t want to test it out!

Needs to be a national compensation inquiry imo, people have been struggling with the cost of living for a few years and extra cost on their car insurance (sometimes the only viable travel option for people/journeys) wouldn't have helped.

Is this not linked primarily to the time period after an overhead limit changes, not just any camera?

The news articles are quite confusing….The PH consensus on this (from past threads) suggests that those caught receive a photo of their car AND one of the gantry taken simultaneously. If (as the articles I have read seem to imply), a (speed) camera delay missed a raising of the limit, then the gantry picture would prove the fault and a prosecution couldn’t take place.

The real story must be that the (speed) camera is SUPPOSED to have a delay, so that anyone passing under or very close to the gantry during a change is not caught by a lowered limit that they know nothing about. Presumably that delay has been judged to be too short - maybe OK if a 70 changes to a 60 but not long enough if a 50 goes to a 40?

This is precisely why I always reverse down motorways, to confuse the camera operator.

Wow, I wonder just how far this goes, I would imagine the wagons are being circled as we speak.

I'm sure this predates 2021, too.

In 2019, I got a ticket for 48 in a 40 on the M25, but I swear blind that, as I passed under the gantry, the last visible number was 50. The camera flashed and I assumed it was for the bloke who was overtaking me at the time. Nope - 5 days later, the NIP arrived.

The next gantry showed 40, so the limit had changed, but I'm certain in my own mind that no 'grace period' had been applied.

Meh that'll never happen in <5yrs with ~£100M blown on it with all the committee meetings, luvvie consultants and the result will be "tough luck you shouldn't have been speeding in the first place"!

Gosh, could you imagine if someone already had 9 points, then lost their licence and maybe their job too.

Gonna see some compo face photos in the news soon.

Nick Freeman was on the news this morning pointing that out, saying go see a solicitor, complain to force that prosecuted based on false information.

Prosecuting based on false information, that sounds really familiar.

Post Office anyone!

As someone said that they aren’t using any of the cameras. I imagine this is the tip of an iceberg, you’ll probably find in a couple of months that the idea of using two radars to confirm speed rather than radar and white painted lines has been found to have some issues as well….

Anyone know of any legal case where someone has successfully challenged the cameras? Will probably give an idea if it just a case of timing of the screen change or a the lawyer initiated a broader challenge to the cameras?

To be fair, the error has been found. Perhaps they investigated many similar complaints at one camera location or a regular systems check revealed it. Either way, they could have just stayed quiet, in many countries it would have been 'nothing to see here.' frown

There was a thread on here recently where someone claimed they were caught speeding despite doing the speed shown on the gantry as well weren't they.

Yup and the camera showed 1hr 24m or something like that since limit change. Think he might finally have his angle to challenge!
