Nice Traffic Police
Discussion
Having not had any runs in with the police for many many years today I had another.
My m4 has horrible, illegal metro and tinted plates on it, I bought them no realising how bad they would be in person, fitted them and figured I would swap them over at some point so stuck the standard ones in the front of the car.
Anyway - passed the police on the road today, they never turned round, I popped into lidl and the wife called me to say the police were next to the car saying it wasn’t insured.
I popped out, they advised they were recording me on a bodycam, asked me was it insured (it is) but I cannot remember who with, thankfully I then realised in my wisdom, I registered my private plate to the car but never told the insurance, I gave them the old reg and they advised it was insured and who I was insured with, then they asked me about the plates, I was honest, bought them thinking they would like smart, they don’t.
I offered to swap them in the car park if they could lend me scissors for the plate tape, they were very nice and just said, swap them as soon as you can, and call you insurance and add the plates on.
Nothing else, no BS just a nice and pleasant encounter and some nice compliments about the car.
I guess not being a d1ck is a huge relief for them given the way people act today.
Anyway, that was part of my day…My daughters enjoyed it (4&5)

Traffic cops are normally helpful to decent people, at the end of the day they don't take pleasure in dealing with serious injury or fatal collisions and their aim is to reduce that happening, the people who moan about them are usually the scrotes who commit road traffic offences or don't believe in having driving documents and get caught, they're not 'nice' to them and quite right too.

Believe it or not the Traffic Policewomen said they prefer pulling people over than dealing with horrific accidents.Well I was in the wrong 100% I forgot to swap my
Insurance for the plate and I knowingly had horrible illegal plates on.
All was fine until I fitted the standard plates today and managed to lose one on my travels……back to get another made tomorrow.
Last couple of interactions have been reasonable and fair.
Half of my commuting is done between the hours of 0100 and 0500, or used to be. I'd often make progress with virtually nothing on the road. Pulling off the M18 and taking the roundabout at the limit of grip, notice a Peugeot (should have been obvious) boot it and catch me up. Got to within a car length of my rear bumper at which point I could see POLICE in big writing on the bonnet. Didn't pull me over, looped back round at the next roundabout and off he went.
Second one was a bit more baity. The Parkway into Sheffield always used to be NSL dual carriageway, it's now 50. When it's empty at 0200 I tend to do 70, not unusual to be overtaken doing that speed at that time of night. Slowly caught a car up so pulled out to overtake, he started accelerating so I did the same until 80ish at which point he aggressively braked, pulled in behind and lit the blues up (car was unmarked). Slowed down and he didn't pull me either but we did sort of have this weird standoff where we followed each other at 50 while the few other cars continued past us at 70ish
Bit futile I thought but appreciated being spared a lecture.

The other way of looking at this story is:
“Are police officers so bad/useless/petty/vindictive/incompetent that we are so shocked when we meet a decent one, we feel the need to tell everyone?”
Personally, I would expect every police officer to be courteous, decent, understanding, reasonable, intelligent, and highly capable.

The problem is that the vast majority of Police Officers carrying out their (often, unpleasant duties) do so in a professional and capable manner is not newsworthy. The media and in particular social media only tend to comment on what they perceive negative encounters (see the 'Weirdest Police Encounter' thread in the last few days here where the author had clearly been a bit cocky and then proceeded to knock the Bobbies). Most of them have no idea what the Police have to put up with and the pressures they are under. Are police officers so bad/useless/petty/vindictive/incompetent that we are so shocked when we meet a decent one, we feel the need to tell everyone?

I had a similar issue when i changed to my own private plate, though thankfully they are just standard plates. I simply forgot to inform my insurance company about the change. Had been driving for months with no issue and got pulled over on my Sunday morning drive for the newspaper. Police officer was pretty ok when i realised what the issue was and it was sorted the following day.
It’s all part of the attitude test. Being in my late 50s I’m not likely to get lippy with a cop. That was not always the case.

He will have been one of the Mets rotten apple cops that had strayed across his border and was having a short rest from being rotten. Being rotten all the time can't be easy for them. Hopefully he's now returned back to his home county and has resumed normal business.Forums | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
