I had my stereo stolen a while ago, informed the police and they came round took details and fingerprints, which I was surprised at, I thought the most that would happen was that I would be logged as another stolen stereo incident.

I received a phone call the other day saying they had recovered a load of stereos, and they wanted my serial number and code.

If mine matches up, does that mean I will get my stereo back?

Dont know, but you should tell your insurers. I recall a chap who had his radio nicked from his car, got the insurance guy round to fill in the claim form, no problem sir just a few details.

The last question was someghing "Every made a previous claim",

Man said "I had a radio nicked before, but didnt bother reporting it" to which the insurance bloke said something like "Oh, sorry sir, you should have told us, and we would have increased your premium, your now a risk, (or something like that), and sorry we cant pay out, because you didnt tell us etc etc etc"

Mind its a toss up against the chance of it never happening again v higher premiums, and if you did claim, would they know of a previous theft, wicked world aint it?

If you ID one as yours then they may well return but most likely retain as evidence until the case disposed of after which they will return (but may need a reminder) as it is yours. UNLESS you have made a claim under Insurance and been paid out. If so then technically the stolen goods now belong to the Insurance company.

This is why it's usually not worth reporting theft such as the above to the ins co. They'll happily stab you in the back given half a chance.

I asked my insurance company if I could claim and at what expense, they said I would have to pay the £200 excess and couldn't guarantee that my protected no claims would not be affected...err whats the point of being protected then!!!

needless to say that I didn't bother claiming.

I gave the police my serial number today and asked if I'd get it back if it matched up, and he avoided answer the question.

I'll remind them in a few weeks if I don't hear anything.

thanks for all your replys
