I was on the M62 Manchester-Leeds early last Saturday morning, tootling along happily at 75-80mph when a red Audi A3 flew past in the outside lane, easily doing 110-120mph. Flying he was. "What a berk" I mused. Very nice to see him pulled over by a marked plod car five miles further up the road. Irresponsible speeding deserves to be punished - it's the unfair positioning of scamera vans catching us doing 81 on a dual 70 that grates so much.

What were the road conditions like? Busy, raining etc? It's interesting to see different opinions of 'irresponsible' speeding. That speed in itself wouldn't necessarily be dangerous in my opinion, it's the circumstances that count. Not having a dig, just interested in a 'bigger picture'....

If ever I get pulled for speeding, can you try to make sure that it's you that pulls me

Word to the occifer.

Clear road, light traffic, good conditions, 100+ shouldn't be an issue if done correctly.

A 40+ mph closing speed sounds marginally dangerous even under ideal conditions.

Hazy early morning sun. The odd mist patch. Tis the highest stretch of motorway in the UK, so the signs say. Driving like an utter berk ain't excuseable in any conditions.

Well you drive a Porsche Rob so you'd definately get pulled for 71mph!!

Cheers for the further info, 'driving like a berk' is a very different thing to just exceeding a speed limit....

Why do you think so many people buy silver porsches. On a snooker day you're blue 911 is worth 5 points.

Also explains why no one buys red 911s anymore.

Not many yellow green or brown cars about though...

What do white cars get then? Do you have to nick a white, then a red, then a colour?

Or do you just skip the white and go straight to red....

A bit like passing a parked car in a 40mph zone then ?

Or indeed driving down the 30mph road with an oncoming car.

A few times I've seen reports of vehicles doing very big speeds (120MPH+) when they get caught by the police. The typical knee jerk reactions from some road safety groups is typical i.e. lethal and an accident waiting to happen.

Then on the other hand we have the people who think that as long as they can stop in the distance they can be clear then any speed is appropriate.

I most definitely used to belong to the latter group, but now I am not so sure. Surely it is the speed differential that is the issue.

We may have a clear lane as far as the eye can see but can we justify a 70mph speed differential when there is other traffic about? I'm most concerned about dual carriageways.

I want to remain safe and then have the fun of driving progressively.

What do others think?

I would certainly not entertain a speed differential of more than about 30 mph without a clear lane between us. Unless I was very, very certain the other drive had seen me.

Each case on it's merits then.

I believe a Speed differential of >30mph when overtaking is not safe.
Someone mentioned two cars meeting which is different, as one would hope that the car you were meeting had a reasonable idea you were approaching which cannot always be said if you are taking someone from behind (Sorry)!
Travelling at high speed on Dual/Motorways I only feel comfortable with no other vehicles around me, I do not put my trust in someone else knowing I'm coming and so not crossing to the other lane to avoid a bit of debris or bird I wouldn't have seen. Even though I tend to drive with my lights on all the time (not blue ones) people do still cross into my path for reasons known only to them.

If the chap was pulled by a marked car, I'd suggest there was an ability gap between his speed and his observation...

But I wasn't there - just my 2p worth.

I would have thought white cars were safe - imageine if they were going for a black, and stopped a white instead. 7 away...

For variety they may try billiards from time to time, you get points for potting an opponents white, but mind you also get points (less) for potting their own, that said they might not play that one......
