I would love to apply for a job in North Wales just to get knocked back and sue the moron. How is it legal; or moral for that matter, to discriminate against someone who uses a product that is perfectly legal? I would love to see if he is also going to ban lardarses from applying for jobs as well. I think not.

In the jobs market, you ca't be prejudiced against anyone on grounds of age/race/colour/sex/orientation/religion/etc, but obviously "smoker" is a minority you can legitimately persecute.

How long before "motorist" is another group the police will discriminate against in jobs? Or, perhaps less extreme, "motorists with speeding points"?

In all objective fairness, Brunstrom is a particularly unbalanced and senseless individual. Only an all-knowing deity would know how he found his way to the higher echelons of the police force.

Give him his due, he's probably correct about the habits and attitudes of the majority of smokers. But he shouldn't be stopping smokers from applying for jobs - that is discrimination gone mad.

...just allow non-smokers extra breaks and time off too!! :-)

As I understand it, drinking and gambling are bad for you too. Will he be banning people who drink occasionally and those who fancy a flutter?

Ah, but you can on the basis that they are "too experienced for the role".

I would certainly discriminate against people who always faced North (for example) ... even if some here might argue that this showed they had a magnetic personality .

Right - I'm starting the "Church of the One True Tobacus". All members must smoke at least 20 ciggies, 5 Cigars/pipes of baccie at regular intervals through the day and meet regularly in public houses to fulfill their religious obligations.

Members who are true-believers in the benefits of tobacco would then have redress to law should they be discriminated against or persecuted.

Form an orderly queue for you memberships please.

For sure, those'll be next on the list. Like attacking sections of the motoring / motorcycling community. One at a time...

I wonder how much extra work this will create for the Forensic Science Service.

After all, how else will Brunsturmfurher know that a job applicant is a smoker?

Will "passive smokers" be banned from applying - either as a matter of policy or because the job application has become "cross-contaminated"?

If the applicant has a hobby of curing fish in smoke, what would they answer to the question: "Are you a smoker?"

What about "ex-smokers"? Will they be banned from applying on the grounds that they might relapse?

How will Brumsturmfurher react when a successful non-smoking applicant takes up smoking owing to the pressure of booking countless motorists for travelling one mile per hour faster than the speed limit? Fire them?

I think we should be told!

Where is your Paypal link for donating funds? And your TV channel? Until you have these you can't be considered a to be genuine sect. We need to hear your emotional public pronouncements, read your little red book, and see your statue erected in the heart of Marlboro country before we take you seriously.

I think he's off his trolley, but there IS a small thread of sense running underneath it all...

Coppers, THEORETICALLY, need to be fit to do their job. So if there isn't already one (don't know), there is an argument for introducing a fitness test as part of the application procedure - perfectly justifiable and not discriminatory.

BUT...I'm an unfit beggar and I've never smoked in my life - so under HIS argument, I'd be free to join the force but be less effective in that regard than an otherwise healthy smoker. As would someone severely obese, or with clinically high blood pressure, or with any number of restrictive but not disabling conditions.

And would it be discrimination to stop any of those people from joining???

Johan Cruyff was a smoker at the peak of his career. Smoking doesn't stop you being fit, it just makes it harder.
