On the Trevor McDonald program the other week, an expert was talking about signage. He stated that the ONLY allowable speed limit signs were a red outer circle, white background and black numbers. He pointed out that signs with a yellow outer ring around the red were illegal. Now my question! In our village we have large yellow rectangular boards, with the red outer circle, white background and black numbers superimposed. Are these correct, as to my mind there's no difference to the yellow outer circle signs the expert said were illegal. Not that I speed in my own village of course, I just wondered. I'm sure someone here will be able to give me chapter and verse.

A requirement in "The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002" is that "a sign for conveying information or a requirement, restriction, prohibition or speed limit.... ... shall be of the size, colour and type shown in the diagram". The Diagram for speed limit sign (No. 670 for boffins) is the round sign with a red border and black letters. Therefore, I would assume that a square one with yellow surround could be considered outside of the law. I could not find any relevant clause to allow for it, but then I am not very familiar with the regulation.

......and to be honest, I would not contest it if I were caught speeding. In my opinion they are easier to see, so I would find it hard to claim that I was expacting to see a different type of sign and became confused!

yes, but... if we are being expected to adhere to the law within such strict limits, then it is incumbent on those in authority to get it exactly right.

I agree that the yellow signs are easier to see, why don't they just change the regs?

It was the fact that the 30 sign was mounted on a circular backboard which is not authorised under the TSGD'd and has to be rectangular unless on a plate alongside a Town sign in which case can be any shaped back board.

DVD, I was hoping you'd join in! But is that a 'legal' or 'illegal' answer?

Aww, damn! Son and I have had great fun over the last couple of weeks pointing at signs and shouting 'Doesnt count, illegal sign'. Thanks for your reply.

Ashes, did you not ask the same question on this thread

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?p=2&f=10&t=219840&h=0&hw=yellow+sign

and I answered in more or less the same terms as DVD above?

Is it not clear that the regs don't need to be changed - they ARE legal?
