Having received another parking ticket last week for parking in my local station car park, I decided to appeal (as I always do whenever I receive a ticket!).

Basic story, is machine refused to take any two of the four pound coins I had in my pocket, it would take any one, but not two at a time. I let someone go in front of me and they managed to buy with a £2 coin. Train then came in, and I left car with no ticket on. When I got home from work, parking ticket was on screen waiting for me.

So I appealed on Wednesday via e-mail, and (as stated in the e-mail), I also posted appeal letter as well - just to be official.

Friday evening I get home from work to find a letter stating that they have considered my appeal, and on this occasion will not be pursuing the fine. I go to the pub with my £35 fine in my pocket and have a few beers, celebrating 8 out of 10 success for parking ticket appeals in the last 12 years!

Saturday morning wake up with a beery head, and open the post. Letter from same parking company, stating that the parking ticket has been upheld!

Same signature (admittedly scanned) on both letters, same reference on both letters!

What should I do? Call them? Ignore them? Write to them with copy of first letter asking them to confirm this is all over?

Assuming you push them all the way ... and you're sat in court - what would the magistrate make of a letter from them saying that you're in the clear?

I'd guess he'd just chuck it out.

But that's not a legal opinion - just a common sense one.

The press might have a field day over it.

If the ticket was stuck on by a Parking Attendant i.e. LA then it won't go Mags Court if not paid but to County Court as a debt recovery.

Would consider writing back with a photocopy of the granting of the appeal letter pointing out that the Notice to pay is in contradiction and you hold them to their first letter.

Wasn't there a similar scam about Reading Railway Staion reported earlier this year when it was discovered they had no authority to issue tickets?????

Might also be worthwhile finding out under what authority they are issing tickets.

This used to happen to me a lot at my local station.

My train to London was at 6:06am and the ticket office didn't open to at leat 6:00. This meant to buy a week-long (had to be week long as I worked for different clients on different weeks and they each wanted a receipt) ticket I had to either risk missing the train by buying my ticket at the ticket office if/when they opened, or use the credit card function on the ticket machine.

Unortunately after at least 10 'notices' on my car for failing to pay - which I did at the soonest possible time - I found out that the 'modem' in the car park ticket maching is not left on 24hrs/day and only gets switched on when the station manager opens the ticket office up in the morning.

Luckily they don't issue penalty tickets, just little pre-printed post-its that you hand over to the ticket staff and/or ignore - never had one followed up in over 3 years.
