I am not a troll. I have mailed Ted and a couple of Mods and they know who I am and it will be obvious why I don't want to post this under my usual login.

The police have been round tonight and served me with a Notice of Threat to Personal Safety. They have alarmed the house and given me a personal attack alarm. They arent allowed to give me all the information.

I dont want to say any more here, but if any of the Plod would talk to me about what this could mean, it would be worth a beer. I am happy for them to mail Ted and find out who I am before mailing me.

Mods, sorry for cross posting but I need to ask some questions urgently.

Is this totally out of the blue or does someone you know have it in for you (or family)? I've never heard of one before and I was a BiB for 7 years in London, admittedly 5 years ago so things may have changed.

What exaxtly does the notice say?

I have never heard of anything like this before. An obviously very worrying situation. I would be asking firstly

1) If I am at that amount of risk, is ther not an officer posted at my house, and

2) If they could tell me what the threat actually was, I would know what to look for.

I think perhaps the Data Protection Act allows you access to all date and information held about you on a computer of paper based filing system. I would perhaps quote that to help find out what is going on.

Good luck. Tell us how it goes, and I do hope everything is ok.

Lack of resources apparently.

The police can't have an officer to stand guard for all of us but heaven forbid we own a weapon.

I would make an educated guess that some sort of surveillance operation is in place and that the attack alarm is 'belt and braces'. I don't think they would have gone to the lengths already described if it wasn't something serious.

Exemptions on disclosure (even to the Data Subject) for "prevention and detection of crime" and others. Quoting it in such an instance (extrapolating from meagre information supplied), is unlikely to be effective - Streaky

Possibly your name/address has been found on a "target list". If you or your employer or a company of which you are a director are involved with the use of animals for research (even quite distantly), your details could be known to various "animal rights" campaign groups. Hope nothing comes of it - Streaky

PS - alternatively, are you a recently "twice-retired" government Minister? - S
