Budding young artists across the county have helped the Partnership design its new 2006 calendar, which reminds motorists to keep their speeds down throughout the year.
Thirteen year six pupils from Great Chart School, Ashford, Sherwin Knight Junior School, Strood, Bidborough CE School Tunbridge Wells and Wrotham Road Primary School, Gravesend have all won the chance to have their poster published in the calendar.
Rachel Moon Communications Manager said: "The reason for involving pupils in our calendar project is to give them the opportunity to express their thoughts on speeding traffic and road safety in a creative way. It is important to educate children about safety on our roads at an early age and it's always fun to see their work in print!"
Road Safety Officers from Medway Council and Kent County Council helped judge the winning designs and the calendars will be distributed to the media, at events, presentations and of course the schools.

[Gross generalisation mode]Well Tunbrige kids are probably all carted to school in mummy's 4x4, so they'll all be easy fodder. And Gravesend kids? Don't ask...I used to work there, was very glad the office had a car park and the car wasn't on the street! The name of the town is worryingly accurate.[/back to talking sense]
What a bunch of *&%$ing *&^%$£s (the Councils and SCPs, that is) - education when i was at school was about teaching us to think for ourselves, but clearly that's far too dangerous (someone might get killed by an over-the-limit concept, after all!!!), so lets tell our kids what's right and wrong!!!

and when the litte ones are finished making these pictures, they can sit in the toy car in Tunbridge Wells shopping mall, that has a GATSO (with a cute little cartoon arm pointing at the car)
Every time I walk past it, I get an uncontrollable urge to get a cartoon tyre, and some cartoon diesel, and necklace the friggin thing.

On several postings here I have been trying to emphasize the need for increased training for ALL road users, especially children, but unfortunately this is another example of the way in which ALL responsibility for road safety is being loaded onto one section of road users. Why didnt they have a poster competition showing that children must check the road carefully if they want to cross, why didnt they have campaign which teaches children that they have a responsibility for their own safety and that it doesnt matter if a car is going at 3mph or 30mph, if it hits them it is going to hurt, Why didnt they show children, that if they ride their bikes on public roads without lights when it is dark it is highly likely that other road users will not see them and as a consequence hit them. Why dont they have a competion to show parents how they can increase their childrens safety when out on Britains Roads. I suspect even the dumbest kid will grasp the fact that cars ARE dangerous when mixed in with pedestrians and cyclists. As usual, the completely thoughtless emphasis on vehicle speeds which will do almost if not entirely nothing to improve safety standards.
I wsa in Kent the other day. Speed didn't appear to be doing a lot of killing. Must have had the morning off. Perhaps it was down the local school.
On the bright side, this will have no impact whatsoever. By the time the kids are 17 and ready to drive, they will be testosterone fueled bags or rebellion, out to burn rubber - and with a DSA test under their belts and an hour of WRC telly in their brains, be confirmed as God's own gift to driving.
Is it later, but not much later, that they will find out that lamp-posts kill, not speed.

Well, I wrote to Rachel to see what she has to say...

Dear Rachel,
I read with interest your article promoting the new Camera Partnership calendar on your website...

I note your quote ""The reason for involving pupils in our calendar project is to give them the opportunity to express their thoughts on speeding traffic and road safety in a creative way. It is important to educate children about safety on our roads at an early age and it's always fun to see their work in print!"
Very interesting to see that there are camera's galore in their designs and little evidence of the simple "Green Cross Code" method that I was taught for road safety as a child. Perhaps thats because the designs were chosen by your team who have a vested interest in the camera's staying.
Are your Road Safety Officers also educating children that Speed Camera's are not the pantheon of safety that they are often mistakenly expected to be?
Are also they explaining the dangers to children of proper road saftey for pedestrians and cyclists, on the importance of the regular maintenance of vehicles, the importance of keeping untaxed, uninsured, unlicensed motorists off the road, and of the importance of the non drink driving message?
Are they educating them on the importance of greater advanced driver training, on the fact that speed in itself is not dangerous, poor driver ability, and lack of road-sense kill far more people than just speed itself.
It would be most interesting to hear what the average child in Kent believes is the most effective way of tackling speeding traffic and road safety are. I wonder if they'll all reply "speed cameras!"?

Tim Freeman

Nothing wrong with that, they will grow up to not speed and be brainless morons with no sense of perception or speed on the road, and then the pratnerships will have no source of income and go out of business.
Hence leaving those of us who are now much older to retake the roads in a roar of triumphant (no, not in triumphs) common sense and appropriate speed
PS, any way the calendar picture "Keep your speed down! It kills!" is advertising in a product (ie, calendar)... could we get the ASA on them for that? Pretty sure if speed kills then we'd all be dead by now within a second of being born. Also quite sure road traffic accidents kill, not speed. Speed by definition is not a physical entity to kill anyone or interact with anything.

Nice letter there Tim. She'll probably reply, she did to me when I had a little dig. But you could tell from the tone of the letter that:
a) she completely believes in Scameras, nothing will change her mind.
b) she couldn't give a rat's @rse about the general public's opinion.
You might be surprised to learn that Rachel, like Vicky Cann of the Essex Partnership toe the line pretty rigidly and nothing, I mean absolutely nothing will get them to discuss anything other than speeding bad cameras good. To be fair to them it would be akin to telling your boss to sack you cos a housebrick could do your job. I just wonder how they sleep at night knowing their policies are causing deaths that could be avoided.
I wonder if Rachel actually looked at those cards and realised the kid who drew it might die because it didn't know how to look right, look left and look right again or don't cross the road between parked cars, or don't chase your ball onto a road.
