Old style Black & Silver Reg Plates
Discussion
I'm cosidering the purchase of a 1974 Lotus. Currently the car has modern black/yellow plates on it. To make the car look more "period" I would fit the old style ally black and silver plates.
I have 2 questions for our resident BiB.
Upto which year are these plates legal? There is a Maybach in our town that has old style plates on it. I thought new cars had to have "new" style plates.
If I set off a Gatso, will the number be visible?

I think - without looking it up - that the old plates were OK only on cars registered up to 1 Jan 1973 - thereafter it has to be the new ones...... Any 'new' car with the old black and silver plates that gets stopped may get a fixed penalty notice - non endorseable ; which I think is £30 or £40.

What knd of plate is that ?
As i understand it you can't even buy new black and silver paltes for old cars these days - if you went to somewhere to 'officially' sell you numberplates you'd have to have white/yellows made up. Plus all the hassle that comes with actually trying to buy a numberplate...
73 is the latest model year that can legally show black plates, so that is up to an L reg.
