BBC Have Your Say on Speed Cameras

Already seen Harry Flashman's comment on there, added one of my own. It's pretty one-sided, although there are a few die-hard brainwashees from the 'speed kills' camp.
Makes reassuring reading.

Hell, I posted twice - first time just general points, second time to rebut a couple of idiots, sorry, I mean pro-camera people!
What good it'll do - dunno. It's a wider audience than PH on there, but the pro-camera crowd are very entrenched in their opinions, and the BBC is hardly known now for it's anti-government stance.

I've never had any of my comments published. Probably because I'm not pro climate change panic and speed cameras, and I complain about people who say that the black smoke from burning petrol in Herts is identical to burning it in car engines (have they never heard of catalytic converters?).
There's some angry little men on there isn't there.
I particularly enjoyed Andrew of London, who wanted to ban speeders from driving for a year and similarly motorcyclists for filtering as it was illegal.
I notice neither of my comments have permitted either yet. Keep up the good work Harry Flashman
Steve.

Some of the pro-camera comments are so totally ignorant I just don't know where to start.
And that is the problem - they've swallowed a soundbite and haven't ever bothered to engage their brain! Which is why Tony got in for a third term, and why this farce has survived for as long as it has...
I notice that they haven't updated it for anything since 17:43 last night...guess the comments were getting too one-sided and the arguments too irrefutable for the lentilists that run the BBC!

Speed limits are there for a purpose. If you don't want to pay a speeding fine, don't break the speed limit. Rather than cut these cameras, increase their number: especially on roads used as race tracks. Speed cameras every 50 yards will catch a speeder many times in a few minutes. Each instance will result in a fine and three penalty points: if the speeder has passed 12 cameras that's a three year ban and the roads will be a safer place for the rest of us.

I noticed Mr Moronman's quote, his maths are quite clearly as good as his common sense.
I was thinking about the burglary and CCTV thing overnight. I think that misses the point.
I think this is more to the point. We all know that taking paperclips from the stationery cupboard at work is stealing. And it's not a victimless crime -- it adds cost to the company and ultimately uses up the earth's resources more quickly (because if you didn't have the paperclip you couldn't use one).
Now imagine putting CCTV watching the stationery cupboard. And sending a NIP to everyone who was seen taking paperclips if it was obvious from the picture that they didn't have company-headed paper in their hands. And making you prove you're innocent if in fact it was for company purposes.
Now if that were done then everyone would be up in arms. "How can you prosecute people for such tiny crimes?", they would say. "Yes, it's true that it's a crime, but it's so trivial. You should be out catching burglars".
Yet this is the approach taken with speed cameras. And people can't see that speeding -- at least most speeding, in most conditions -- is trivial. Because they've swallowed the lie that all drivers exceeding every arbitrary and arbitrarily reduced limit are by definition dangerous criminals.
No, I don't have suggestions for how to change the perception, but at least it makes me feel better when I can see parallels that demonstrate the farcical nature of it all.
