aaaaaahh these cause more problems with traffic flow on the motorway than
police patrols.

They amble along at 55 mph, people see them, can't quiet decide if it is the police,
slow down, from whatever speed they were doing, to crawl past at 65 mph
only to speed up.

This causes lengthy queues, predominantly in the outside lane, thereby interrupting traffic flow which was doing nicely.

They have "highways agency" in small letters on the bumper and a thin light bar so from a distance they look like the police.

In view of the lack of police patrols, i do Cheshire to London and the Southampton area regularly and never see a police patrol, is this a covert attempt to inject some order to compensate for the fact that everyone is issuing asbos instead of doing the job they have been training for?

Nice to know that yet another "solution" from our fantastic government has made the situation even more pear shaped than it was in the first place. Oh dear!

Don't blame the Agency's vehicles and staff who are out there doing a valuable job.

Blame the numpties who can't tell the difference between blue and orange.

Give it a year or two and even the numpties will have worked it out and we will all be able to get back to normal.

Yes they are doing a worthy job but the vehicles don't need to look quite so close to POlice colours. Orange and Red battenburgs would work just as well if visibility is the issue.

They have done the same thing with traffic wardens cars in London now so they look very similar to the normal plod astras etc.

TBH, if you cant tell the difference between the Police, Paramedics, Ambulances, British Transport Police, Recovery vehicles, Road surveys, Motorway maintenance, un-marked plod etc etc etc, you've only got yourself to blame. It is great fun when you realise everyone is cruising at 60mph because 'Freds Tyres Services' has got some day-glo and orange lights on his white Trooper and you just continue past. My wife is always screaming at me "Police car, slow down!" and I have been wondering for some time when she was going to clock the Paramedic and start squeaking

I've seen alot of these Highways Agency vehicles this week.

What exactly do they do? I see some cruising along and at other times sitting on bridges waiting for something?

Do they have any powers at all? Do they report number plates who may be on a mobile phone or doing 90 or whatever?

Why not just zip past at 70 if thats the speed limit on the road, I understand what you are saying, but why do folk drop below 70 on these occasions, like those who drop to about 55 when they pass a camera on a 70 stretch.

That's because the general pubic are as neurotic as you seem to be about speeding!(or being caught speeding!!)
They patrol at 50 -55mph in lane 1, because that's usually the speed that lane 1 runs at, and they have stop to investigate broken down vehicles, remove debris etc. now it would be a bit difficult keep dashing over from lane 3 don't you think?

Yes most people are idiots and can't tell the difference. The point is that it has a negative effect on traffic which then effects all the brilliant observant drivers who visit this board.

you must have bloody good eyesight if you can spot the difference in blood/police/paramedic cars on the motorway in the dark when to most people all they can see until they are almost on top of them is a light bar and reflective strips
