I just went down to London 'at a good rate of knots' and slowed down as i went into Welwyn garden city. I was doing maybe 43 in a 30 at 5:00am and sure enough the only other car around was a cop coming the other way

Soo....he turns around and 'chases me down'

Do you know why i stopped you"?

:me: Broken Headlight?

Yes, and you were speeding!

:me: You were going the opposite way to me, how you could you record my speed?

I turned around and had to do 45 to catch up with you, this is a 30mph road...

:me: <freindly laugh> All that proves is is i was doing less than 45, and You were speeding doesn't it?

<wry smile> well, just be careful...

:me: Thanks very much, cya

Why is he cheeky for doing his job by pulling you over for doing 43 in a 30 zone?

So, this week alone, you could have got at least 6 points on your licence.

(Following cop cars at 90mph, and speeding in a 30 with broken headlight)

Perhaps you need to look at your driving behaviour and attitude ?

Obviously the headlight is the reason i was pulled over, but he decided to switch the attention to my 'speeding'.

As you can tell by the grins and laughs, it was quite a light hearted exchange..I think he also realised how bloody cold it was when he got out of his car, so didn't want to hang around too long. I was only stopped for about one minute.

BTW, I would have fixed the headlight, but i can't get to it as the bonnet catch has got stuck, the car is going in for repair this week.

Yes, but all know that doing 42 in a 30 at 5:00am isn't really speeding

Then you should have said "officer I was doing 42", and let the magistrate acquit you.

You are right of course

And my sidelights work, so it is not like i looked like a motorbike coming towards him or anything like that.

Why would he do that? Surely if he'd pulled you in for a broken headlight, he would have mentioned that as well.

I realise from the smiley that you probably don't mean that, but I have to ask: suppose you had seen some chavved up Nova with a load of baseball-capped 17 year olds doing 43mph in a 30 zone with a broken headlight. You would have thought, "Tossers", wouldn't you. Then supposing you'd seen them being pulled in by the BiB. You'd have thought, "Good, serves them right." Then suppose you later found out they'd been let off because they were cheeky to the officer and for whatever reason he'd decided not to give them a ticket. You'd have thought, "That's out of order, they should have been done."

Obviously, I'm presuming quite a lot about your thought processes here, and I realise that as you say, the encounter was light-hearted, but I don't really think that it's cheeky for a copper to pull you over for breaking the law.

He did mention the headlight!

But he preferred to go for the speeding aspect for some reason. I expected / deserved a producer or a fix it ticket to be honest, but after our banter he cheerfully let me go.

I guess i passed the attitude test, however i went about it

Added: BTW when i say 'Broken Headlight' I mean the bulb has gone, its not smashed or damaged.

Questioning an Officers ability to gather evidence and apply it is usually a sure-fire way to have your car compltetely pulled apart for things like incorrect tyre pressures, washer bottle fluid etc. Seriously, you were damn lucky that he probably wanted to be in bed in an hours time and couldn't be bothered with the paperwork. I'm suprised he turned around in the first place but just bear it in mind Hedders. Giving the impression that you know what he can and can't do will normally end in tears.

Will do,

Now that i think about it, his final words before he let me go were:

"Have you been drinking tonight?"

So that actually may have been all he was interested in, but he got sidetracked.

Don't get me wrong, I am not grumbling about this experience, i found it all quite funny which i would not have done had I been drunk etc, so good for him!
