PC Coetzee of Nottinghamshire police has just been awarded copper of the year.

A career bobby who grew up in South Africa, he moved to UK after many years in police there, lived here for the qualifying 2 years and then joined up in UK.

Beat bobby for Ladywood district and has cleared up the streets armed with not much more than his truncheon (yes I know it's an unPC term) and his mountain bike.

309 arrests last year, heading for 380 this year, the residents think he's the dogs wossnames. Hard district but getting better.

The gaffers have told him to back off because of a complaint by the YMCA that their "vulnerable" clients are avoiding the place because PC Coetzee so frequently finds their "vulnerable" clients are scrotes engaged in nefarious activities that he takes them down the nick. Hence their "vulnerable" clients avoid the YMCA as they know they will get nicked on PC Coetzee's patch.

Give me :expletive deleted: strength!

Its all well and good nicking people for Drunk and disorderly/incapable but there must be bigger fish to fry? Without a breakdown of what those arrests were for, I'm reading between the lines a little.

Who said D&D?

Read between the lines of an estate riddled with crime committed to support drug habits.

The article in the Times doesn't tell the full story, the bit about being reined in is omitted.

He has been told to avoid one street because of the complaint that he is nicking the crims too much.

The real story isn't on the net as far as I can see.

Times half assed coverage is here

It was the mention of YMCA that led me down that path.

A breakdown of the arrests would be informative along with any statistics showing a drop in reported crime on his beat. I would hazard a guess that most of the poeple who were committing crime on his patch have just moved to a neighbouring beat. If that's the case then the problem hasn't really been solved.

He does sound like a character though. I was shocked at the average arrest figures they quoted, something like 9 per officer average per year. There are some lazy bastards out there.

PC Coetzee said:

“If I identify someone as a disqualified driver I give chase,” he said. “I can go on the pavement, whereas they can get stopped by traffic, and before they know it I am on top of them. One or two get away but I can pick them up later. The majority of my chases lead to arrests.”

Cleaning the streets up of this type of crime, petty theft, car theft, hooliganism and drunken and disorderly behaviour is what most of the general public want the police to be doing and seen to be doing. The trouble is that this is not what most of the police are doing.
Good luck to this copper and keep up the good work.

We need more of these coppers and less do gooders. The honest people of his area will want him to do just what he does, they will not be bothered if the scum moves on to another area theirs will be improved. When we start making bad behaviour of all types punishable we will start to make improvments.

True - we need more of these.

Lieber FiF - I read of this chap about two month ago in the Waily. As you reply to wotshisname (have forgotten - ist "senior whiskers moment ) - not about D&D. He ist not targetting the odd drunk who stagger into his path und gob all over him

According to Waily of couple of month back - this guy get stuck in und clean up the muggers, burglars, petty thieves und give Happy Handcuffs to any Happy Slapper he find on beat. Und he also rounds up drunks und druggies as well.

Judging by Coetzees success we should be importing more of SA's finest, there plenty of work for them, and who really gives a FK if a few heads get broken on the way? Well done Coetzee! keep harassing the pikeys and scrotes and hopefully a few of the lazy BiBs will learn from your excellent example and the lazy waste-of-space magistrates might just wake up out of their beer-induced heavy-lunch dreams!!!

May I exercise a note of caution about the statistics of 9 arrests per year and the automatic assumption on here and elsewhere that this proves laziness.

To give just one example.

You could have a major investigation, with a lot of people working their nuts off on the case, for a very long time, only for it to culminate in one arrest. I wouldn't call those people lazy, I wouldn't call bib in general lazy, far from it. Yes there is always one in any organisation, but I really don't think you can read too much into the stats.

Mind you on a side note for DVD. Bro was ranting about mud on Queen's Highway the other day. I do believe he used the term lazy when commenting why Lincs finest were not on the job. Oops!

Words fail me.

Could there ever be a better example of the utterly utterly demented country we now reside in?

Yep, get more over! They would be gagging for work like this. Back home they have to buy their own bullet-proof vests! Madness!

Yep,this is what we want, a removal of the low-level crime and intimidation that can make some streets depressing places to be. This is of course what that f-wit Blair said he was going to, but singularly failed to, acheive.

Point taken!!! but I know of a few BiBs who are soooo peeed off with the local magistrates they just don't bother with the small scrotes, they just get completely ignored, that is, until a local councillor gets his car vandalised, then he speaks to the local JP and local scrotes get a real wigging for a couple of days.....
