Road tax/sorn question.
Discussion
My question is this.
Before SORN was introduced back in Jan 98 if you have a vehicle for which no tax disc was in force you didnt have to declare SORN.
How do you go about getting it taxed now?
Simple i hear you cry, just go fill in the relevant post office forms etc.
If only!
Ya see, a quick check on the dvla site has shown up a rather worrying problem.
Namely the dvla have got the vehicle liability date as being 1998 and the vehicle didnt have a tax disc in force at that time.
Also its down as unlicenced.??
No SORN was sent, no reminders, nothing which tallies with the fact that it was off road and no tax was disc in force after the SORN was introduced.
Am i right in thinking that the moment i go fill in a tax yer vehicle form, theyll jump on me with a 1000 sovs fine for every year it was untaxed?????
Understandably i dont want to set a train of events in motion thatll cost me well, loads.
Any advice/suggestions (except suicide) gratefully appreciated.

Came across this a while ago - had a car last tax expiry was jan 1991 - i got car in May 2000, worried about sorn, rang dvla and assured not a problem.
When it was due to go on road (mar 2002), just filled in a tax application, got disc - no problem, no fines, nothing.
Hope this helps

Thanks for that Stubydoo. The thing is its listed up on the dvla website as "unlicensed" and liable for 1998, which i know it wasnt.
Still, they seem to know where all our untaxed cars are....not.
Its got me a bit worried in case i open a very large worm can........
If your vehicle was off the road untaxed before 31.1.98 then you should have no problems. On 31.1.98 annual SORN came into effect in relation to relevant GB vehicle
which does not include vehicle which was untaxed on 31.1.98, no Licence taken out since and not used on a public road. Yours appears to be outside the scope of SORN.
Have a look at:

Reg 26, then on to:
Schedule 4
1 (2) (a) (i.ii.iii)

Thanks DVD, thats what i was hoping. If their all seeing computer system believes the car to be unlicensed but seems to think their was a tax disc in force then why havent they sent out any sorn reminders or fines???
Anyhow, cheers again.

Have you got one of the new V5Cs for it?
If not then it may not be on their radar and you may have to re-register it and you may lose the registration number.
I am in the same situation with an old car taken off the road for a rebuild (before SORN came in) and never used on the road since, however I have a new V5 so they know about the car.

Vehicles not issued with the new V5C will NOT lose their original registration number, this was a scare story that came from somewhere.
