I know there will be mixed feeling about a topic like this but i think it is a bit silly.

Seeing as ashtrays are not supplied in public places and rubbish bins tend to burn if you thrown lit ciggies into them, what exactly is one supposed to do?

I already pay Approx 20p in tax for every ciggie, does that not cover the occasional dropped one? Not to mention of course that my council tax pays the wages of people who are paid to keep the streets clean!

What am i supposed to do, eat the bloody things?

OOps, this should probably be in P+P...

If a council warden collars you for such an 'offence' then walk away. They have no powers of arrest or detention.

Why can't you just put the cigarette out and then put the butt in your pocket until you find a bin - that's what most decent people do with their rubbish. I pay a lot in road tax but it doesn't mean I can discard my dead cars wherever I want.

I sometimes have to eat in a public place. I would not dream of dropping my litter and food waste on the floor for someone else to step in and someone else to clean up.

Just my opinion.

I tend to stub it well out and drop it in the nearest bin.

Neither would I ! They have litter bins for that.

But surely if you are going to stub it out on something, and there are no ashtrays the floor is the next best thing?

I don't want to stub my fag out on the side of a public bin, or on a wall etc. I consider that to be far more distasteful than throwing a butt into the gutter.

I agree.

Food packets/wrappers
Chewing gum
Cigarette butts

Where's the difference? It's your waste, don't inflict it on others.

Which of your three examples is the least offensive in your opinion? I would rather have to walk over cigarette butts than the other two, they don't mess your shoes up or get caught in your laces, infact unless you are crawling along the pavement on your tongue they really shouldn't bother you

I bought my mate a very smart pocket ash tray; it sealed very well so you didn't even have to extinguish the fag properly, it soon went out. Had some sort of car logo on it, possibly MG.
Myself, I smoke unfiltered roll-ups so dispose of my butts with wanton abandon safe in the knowledge that it will have well and truly rotted away months before the street cleaners do their annual sweep.

I would have no problem with you stubbing out your butts on the floor, as long as you put them in the bin afterwards.

I just can't understand how anyone can differentiate between dropping food wrappers etc. and cigaratte butts. Both are littering, and both are unacceptable.

Here you are:

http://twomil.com/pocketashtray/
Box of 10 for £9.99 - you can give the rest away or sell them for £2 each and make a tidy profit.

The 20p tax doesn't cover people to come and clear them all up, if they are lobbed out the window into a dry grass verge there isn't a magic cigarette cleaner who will pick it up and put the fire out. In fact in our area nobody picks litter along the road and they certainly don't walk onto private property to pick up cigarette butts which get lobbed there.

Dropping cigarette butts is a public service, how else are tramps supposed to afford a smoke without adversely affecting their White Lightning budget?

To me it's all litter.

Besides just how many fag butts to most people drop on the floor, millions of them. How to you educate a child not to drop litter when the parents drop fag butts? There isn't really a distinction it's just that up to now smoking was tolerated.

I agree. As a smoker you've chosen to partake in an activity that produces waste. It's your responsibility to dispose of that waste in a suitable fashion. Stubbing it out properly and putting it in a bin/taking it home would seem to be the best way.

If a ciggie butt is well and truely stubbed out, then there should be no problem with the bin going up in flames. If, on the off chance, there's no bin about, what's wrong with putting the butts in your ciggie carton?

I don't smoke, so I don't know, but it just seems logical
