They can flash for 'no reason' (fault), or if set up to detect traffic coming at them face-on (was there any traffic going the other way?) and there's a fault which makes them go off if they get vibration from a HGV, was there a HGV nearby? GATSOs doncha just love em
streaky said:You're probably right. Nobody has sent in any definitive reports of receiving a NIP from a forward facing GATSO flash, but this is such a common occurrence that the use of dummies (radar and flash but no film) to do this trick is widely known. When it first happened to me - a 'delayed' flash as I was overtaken at speed one evening - it temporarily blinded me and I complained to the local gatso shop. They said that being temporarily blinded was less risky than not flashing speeding cars

There's a gatso about 500 yards from my house, facing down the hill towards the house. Ive set it off several times going back up the hill with no NIPs (the road markings are all on the downhill side)
Im sure I read somewhere that Gatsos occasionally flash to re-calibrate themslves, or something like that
Mind, I may have just made that up
