Can mobile plod speed cameras see in the dark?

[mikeb]

Noticed the other evening in a layby on a stretch unlit road near my house a police speed / number plate recognition type scamera van along with two plod chase cars.

They have been there previously in the day but this is the first time I have seen them in the night. Can the camera / laser or whatever it is still work in the night? The road is quite unlit and pretty dark.
