London to see 100 more scameras in 2006
Over 100 new speed cameras were installed in London in the last year -- and a similar number looks set to be installed over the next 12 months, according to figures from the London Safety Camera Partnership (LSCP).
This figure emerges less than a month after the Government climbed down from its stated policy of increasing the numbers of the devices, and instead agreed that road safety was more complex than just being speed-related.
The borough with the highest number of cameras is Croydon with 32, followed by Enfield (29) and Tower Hamlets with 25. Only Kensington & Chelsea has none.
In a nod to the government's new-found wisdom, the LSCP said it would concentrate on identifying more offenders -- apparently only 162,000 of the 310,000 nabbed last year paid their fines -- and on installing speed warning devices, the widgets which flash up your speed but don't photograph your car. It'll also be starting speed awareness courses in April.
The RAC Foundation called instead for more police patrols.
Having said that, it still looks like a collossal waste of money. Most of the traffic going by will be crawling below 20 most of the time so the scameras in this case will just sit there losing money.
They should have bought some more Police officers instead...

At least they're on urban roads rather than on easy-target sweeping dual carriageways where the likelyhood of breaking the speed limit leading to a fatal accident is somewhere near zero.
actually the majority in east london are on triple/dual carriageways with full armco seperation and slip ways on and off (ie no roundabouts/lights) roads like the a13 and a406 signed at 40 and 50mph... scamming parasitic losers

I expect you're too young to remember three lane roads? One lane for us, one lane for them and one lane who whoever has the biggest cojones.

AKA right side, left side and suicide.
It's about time we threw them all out and started fresh, they only seem to help themselfs.

Here here, I will stay out of London as well, of course that is what they want, hence the central no go area called conjestion charge. Again just so the politicians can run arround unhampered to do their usual nothing that matters stuff, and up the rest of us.

Living on the periphery of Greater London, if I ever have need to venture into central london (usually of a night time) I will 99.9% of the time use the well established public transport system. This allows me to enjoy my evening without having to worry about drink driving, NCP charges, parking restrictions etc. Plus, Central London must be one of the few places on earth where you can get stuck in traffic 24 hours of the day, so it rarely makes sense to drive.
A lot of the posts I see on here are along the lines "screw London/ UK" etc as if our cars are the ONLY form of transport. Granted, only the main metropolitan centres have a regular, semi reliable transport system, but sometimes taking the car is just plain stupid. For instance, next week, I am traveling for London to Newcastle, about 310 miles door to door. Instantly this costs me £30 in fuel and about 6 hours each way. Instead I am letting National Express take me up there for £5 each way and I won't feel too knackered when I get there
But I do love my car, don't get me wrong. Its just that some people seem not to accept that there are other ways too.
This means, get as many cameras in as possible while it still makes money then sell the company. The government gets lots of cameras and the companies make lots of money. Why did anyone think this would mean less cameras??

If you need to travel from Bournemouth to London, it can cost you up to £120 (during rush hour on an Open Return) and for that, you aren't even guaranteed a seat. I would hate to think how much a First Class ticket is.
It's only 100 miles, that's about £40 in a car (excluding the congestion charge).
I would love to use public transport (I can get pissed then) but the pricing is extortionate. I haven't even mentioned that it takes between 2 and 3 hours to travel each direction on the train. 3 hours to travel 100 miles. How reasonable is that?

Yep, and being a frequent visitor to east London and both Enfield and Croydon, there are loads on dual carriageways - all down the A10 in Enfield (40mph dc), A406 (50/40mph dc), A12 (40/50mph dc), A2/A102M (50/70mph dc), A23 (30/40mph trunk road/dc), A215(?) Sutton->M25 (2 lane dc 40mph).
I could go on... On most of these road the speed limits are set too low IMHO. Almost of the whole of the A12 was 50mph until a smash a few years ago and it kneejerked down to 40mph (3 lane dc with barriers / concrete walls, good visibility, few bends). Ditto with A102(M)/A2 south of Blackwall Tunnel - used to be 70mph limit.
