No Front Number Plate
Discussion
James here:
After losing mine to poorly maintained roads four times in the last year I am being slightly dilatory in replacing it at the mo. I've decided to do an experiment to see how long it takes to get pulled, I'm now at 3-4months. I also park at the exit to the copshop.
If you have a defaced plate ie mud, broken etc it is upto £1000 and potentially three points. The resaon I removed my damaged plate is because Tony only rates a missing plate ie failure to display as £30 and NO points.
Make your own choice.

What are the penalties for driving around with an out of date tax disc, er, like a month out of date?
I know there is a penalty for failing to display, but not having a current one at all...?
...and no it's not my car!
Best wishes all,
Dave.
£1000 fine or
5 times the amount of duty chargeable for the vehicle,
whichever is the greater.
[Vehicle Excise and Reg Act 1994 Section 29]
plus Court Costs to prosecute.

I have been driving around in my 944 with a small bike style front plate for two years now and never been pulled, my mate has a Triumph 2500 with stick on letters and numbers for the front plate on the bumper, went five years then got pulled and told to change it, which he duly ignored and hasnt been stopped since. My understanding is that it is a fine and no points, if your plate has just fell off, its unlikeley you would get done for it the first time.

What, even if the plate gets covered in mud on a long drive out without a stop? You can depart clean and have it totally obscured within 50 miles. Surely they have to be leniant if the conditions are muddy? If not should we be stopping every 10 miles to check, and carry emergency numberplate cleaning apparatus?

I guess the cops would use common sense. I saw a lot of cars driving around at the weekend with a lot of dirt up the rear, and obscured rear plates. The owners hadn't taken the time to clean them that morning, the cops could technically book them for obscuring. Its not worth the hassle IMO, and it usually means your rear lights are obscured too which is dangerous. A wipe with a tissue while refuelling/before setting off takes 2 seconds.
I have a vinyl front plate which is a lot smaller than the standard spec one on the fron tof my F150 pickup. I did go a couple of days without one at all but got stopped. The reason I was given a caution and not a fine was not clear but the officer did say that one reason for getting in trouble is the fact that, without a front plate, camera vans and road side Police speed checks can't record a vehicle if a numberplate is missing.
So its purely a cash driven thing then
I dont think it is just a question of raising revenue - it would be also more difficult to identify a hit and run driver if half their plates are missing or the car is sporting 'unreadable' plates.
Cant see the attraction of tampered / missing plates myself, and to me it speaks volumes about the mentality of the driver, rather than the ~coolness~ of their car.

Only if they were going backwasrd
I've had no plate on the front for years with no pull at all. I do carry it in the car and place it on view against the windscreen when needed and that seems to be ok. However I have just fitted a small plate (very small) to the front of the car for a trip into europe. The only place I had trouble with no plate was entering the euro tunnel at either end and while driving in France. The closest I had in the UK was on the way to the Fairmile BBQ last August. The police noticed just as I came off the roundabout at the end of the road and came right back on themselves to follow me 2 cars behind. I opted not to stop for much needed fuel and landed it in amongst the other cars at the Fairmile asap and legged it. They did drive in, drove around once and then left.

It's perfectly clear that lots of people find present state use of the numberplates oppressive and inappropriate.
Personally I have very substantial moral objections to the soon-to-be-active vehicle tracking database based on ANPR. And if anyone doesn't, all I can say is more fool them. Just wait and see how errors and abuses will wreck tens of thousands of innocent lives.
I'm too busy on important road safety work to take on such abuses. But who will? I'm waiting to see poeple wake up and a champion or group emerge to fight this particular madness.
