I was speaking to an uncle of mine yesterday and got onto the subject of speeding, when he decended into a rage. After a nice few days in North Wales at new year he was greated with a 'NOT A CIRCULAR' letter on his doormat. Wondering what at was, he opened it to discover a nice red letter from the police threatening him with a 1000 pound fine, etc etc, or pay up 60 quid and 3 points.

His speed?, he was travelling at a frankly lethal speed of 32mph in a 30mph zone.

32.

on news years day morning.

Is this really true? How could they measure 32mph with less than +/-2 mph accuracy?

There are several parts of the UK that are now "Out Of Bounds" for any travel unless absolutely necessary sod the weekend trips to our lovely countryside, mountainbiking all over the country, B&B weekends away etc. I do hope the local economies start suffering as a result.

I just spent a whole month driving down from the UK to west Africa, oh what a pleasure that was, not only can you concentrate on driving but all the extra time you have not looking at your speedo can be spent admiring the local scenery. And yes I have to say it was REALLY noticeable how much more observant people are in other countries of real hazards.

On my list of places I no longer go are:

Cumbria
North Wales
South Wales

That is just appalling. I could go into a huge rage on this myself, but even the scamera operators must surely be thinking that this sort of thing is over the top.

But then I'm sure their argument for this sort of thing would probably still be, "if you hit a child at 32 you are 20% more likely to kill him/her than at 30"

I read somewhere not so long ago that this really might be happening.

I agree. I wrote to the Welsh Tourist Office (info@visitwales.co.uk) explaining that this is why I wouldnt be going back there and suggesting they need to consider the effect that the Pratnerships are having on tourism. Needless to say I didnt get a reply but I hope that if enough people do the same they might start to get the message.

As for 32 in a 30, it just shows how low these people have sunk in order to keep their revenue stream going. Even the ACPO guidelines set under their own beloved Mr Brunstrom dont recommend prosecution at these speeds.

I've wrote to them in the past as well and also didn't get a reply. If enough people keep writing they may take notice. Commercial presure is the way to hit them

I wrote to a local MP (Chris Ruane - Vale of Clwyd) some time ago and his response (after speaking to CC Brunstrom) basically refuted my claim that tourism is being affected.
He also spouted the standard Scamera bulls*&t.
I suppose I shouldn't have expected more as he's a completely useless numpty who is more worried about so-called' global warming than about his own constituency.

Better than that, contact Paul, SS (SafeSpeed) on here. I am sure he has the contacts to take this to the national press. Not only will this outline the problem, it will also probably be overturned!

I'm here.

Is it really a notice of intended prosecution? Not a bizarre warning that we 'might prosecute' 'if we catch you speeding agan'?

If it really is a notice of intended prosecution at 32mph, I'm sure I can place it with the press. I need a scan.

Three people have told me they were done in Sheffield for 32 to 34mph.

Two were unconnected and cited the same camera. The other is a magistrate neighbour, so I have no reason to doubt him.

The Chief Con of South Yorkshire, who's taken over at ACPO from Brunstrom, has said he's lowered the trigger threshold of his cameras.

Reason.....?

Because deaths aren't decreasing......

hiya paul.

will talk to him tonight, see what I can do.

No doubt he'll want the id and any 'jigsaw' id details removed.

I've heard many tales of 32mph NIPs. I haven't seen one yet. I have seen a couple of 34mph NIPs - but still no 34mph prosecutions - the 34mph NIPs sent people on courses.

With this in mind I will need sufficient details to be able to verify the documents. Journalists may take the same view, but I would be prepared to remove all personal details before forwarding the paperwork if that's what the chap demands.

I live in North Wales and we are always told the scameras abide by the ACPO Code of Practice and only prosecute above 10% of limit plus 2mph.

I have heard of 32 in a 30 being prosecuted but not yet seen the evidence so cannot write to local papers unless sure of the facts. I look forward to seeing the scan.

BTW I was talking to a local practice nurse today who was done for 55 in a 50 on a dual carriageway which used to be a 70 limit.

It was reduced following a fatal crash where the driver was found with a lager can crushed between his face and the steering wheel after leaving the road and hitting a streetlamp. Not exactly a speed limit offence.

Cleveland have also prosecuted for speeds between 32 and 35 in a 30 limit.

It's not unusual by any means.

i'm suprised they can do for doing 2mph over a 30 limit, surely thats got to be on the limits of calibration for the speedometer, and the device thats doing you.
