Hi guys, not being the most knowledgeable guy around on how these cameras work I have a question for those clever amongst you.

I was having a gentle drive up from Kettering to Newcastle last night. As I had travelled the road the previous day I knew a camera was coming up so checked the old speedo to find I was cruising at a very gentle 65mph. As I reached the camera an old Ford Orion came past me doing about 90mph and of course the camera flashed away merrily!!!

My question is as we were alongside each other when the camera went off how does it know which car triggered it? In other words please put my mind at rest that I am not going to receive a NIP for someone elses fast driving or lack of photographic observation!!!

Cheers

Pete

My guess is you will both get sent the nip.

You may have to ask to see the photo's and see if you can argue your defense

Thats what I was worried about. So if this is the case how do I prove it was the other idiot doing WAY above the limit. Also despite the fact I was in the inside lane I was driving a scooby and other T**T an Orion, who do you think 'they' will assume was speeding!!! Thirty years of clean license destroyed because a camera can't decide which of two cars was speeding!!!!!

Assuming the camera was a Truvelo: are you sure his front wheels were not ahead of yours exactly when the flash occurred?

The Mini won the booby prize!

I doubt the SCP would deliberately proceed with a prosecution if they weren’t sure which one of you were speeding, their case won’t stand up in court.
I guess time will tell. Keep us updated.

Those white lines on the road (under the mini's wheels) are the secondary speed check. The speed is calculated from the earlier strips and the flash is timed to fire when the camera predicts the vehicle should be on the three white lines.

So in the photo, the Orion should have its wheels on the lines, while your wheels should not be. However, it remains possible that your wheels will be on the lines by pure coincidence. I have no idea how they deal with such a case. Throwing out the photo would seem to be the only option. Perhaps there's a rule that says if two vehicles have their wheels on the lines the evidence is void.

btw - for the original poster - What colour was the flash?

I'm not sure where the mini came from is this a code?? The flash was a bluey white if that makes sense ( I think ). Mind was on swear words at the time!!!

The flash is supposed to be 'a soft pink', the lens of the flash has a magenta cover on it. Look at the pics of the Mini and lorry, specifically the pink tinge on the 'reflective' bits even though it's daylight. A pic on http://forums.pepipoo.com/index.php?showtopic=8588 shows what a night time pic looks like.

If a Truvelo has a 'blue-white' flash (as reported by the OP) then it is operating outside its type approval and its evidence isn't admissable. So I believe. The pic will immediately show if this is the case, in comparison to pics in this thread.

Correct. But...

I've learned that people usually report bright white or blue-white flashes from Truvelos. I think it's because the flash ends up hitting a non-colour sensitive part of the retina. (After all we only have proper colour vision for a small central area, so it makes sense that usually we won't be looking directly at the bloody thing when it flashes.)

Thanks for your words of wisdom guys. I know where the mini came from now I wasn't getting the pics yesterday!!!

I'll keep you informed if and when I get a NIP and if I do you'll probably hear the screams from wherever you are in the country!!!

I must remember to look directly at the camera next time so I see the proper colour it won't matter that my eyes aren't looking where they should be as if I'm not speeding I MUST BE DRIVING SAFELY !!!! Perhaps I should pose this question to my MP and see if he can get a definitive answer

Cheers
