Video Equipping your car
Discussion
After a OAP decided to turn into my lane on the A1 today whilst I was slap bang right next to him and other stupid drivers nearly taking me out I am thinking of having my car video equipped, like the police have.
this is just so I can prove without doubt any issue that may rise due to other road users driving badly.
I have no worry about the video evidence being used against me as I drive to the speed limits and take no risks.
I just want to know if I will need to put notice on my vehicle like "video equipped" or what have you to make the evidence legal.
pls advise.

no idea about the legal aspects in gb , but in the us it is gaining popularity, there is a system that fits to your mirror and due to a trigger, records the first 10 secs and the last 5 to be used as evidence. It did feature on the bbc web site, but can not for the life remember when, don't really see the problem, stops lying and bearing false witness
i'm sure someone has imported it or a chaufer company were seriously thinking about using it in the article.

Ah, you mean the DriveCam:

I have one of these, I bought it 2nd hand and installed before the report on the BBC I think :-)
The image quality is pretty good, but possibly not enough to capture the reg. of a car involved in, say, a hit+run if it was moving quickly, and obviously if it ran into the back of you and disappeared off in the same direction the passenger compartment camera wouldn't pick it up.
Here are some sample stills from mine:

Dark shot, fallen tree on right:
I have a few more events on the camera to download, I will post a few more in a couple of days, including some videos. IIRC it's 6FPS so it's not hugely good, but the sound track does make it look pretty good.
One thing I do need to do is reduce the sensitivity - I have the "erratic driving" set to 0.6G lateral and keep setting it off

Took me a while to find that website, I tell ya
Blimy ,,that must have been a right bastad to track down well done Tony

I'd love one of those things.
If I could, somehow, press a button and have it hive off the last five minutes or something...I'd be pressing the button thrice daily around my town.
I wonder if anyone would pursue "anonymous" "tipoffs" by e-mail!
Genuinely. I've been witness to some humoungous driving - some of the drivers really should be off the road for all our sakes...

Supermono - sorry, was only playing with you. I took a quick look round their site too and, like you, thought "wow, that looks brilliant"....still no wiser where to get one though as they are very 'US' orientated.
I did track down some articles the IAM have done on it though, so they are around in the UK - seems more like on a fleet level though, rather than to Mr Average Consumer.

I recognise that junction
East bound on the A27 by the Oast and Squire PH, waiting to turn right towards Stubbington

Ding! Correct of course. I don't usually venture in that direction except to pick stuff up from the sorting office....
As for buying one, they are $1000ish each, plus $160ish for the software to download the events. Mine cost $350 (dual camera version) including a new licence, which needs to be activated by phone and is locked to the specific camera.
When I was looking to buy orignally I sent them several messages from their website but eventually called and was emailed a quote.

Cheap system is to buy a high res cam from RF Concepts £140 ish (they do a bullet cam kit - call them and they will send you everything you need.) Then buy a video camera with A/V in (250 off e-bay). Spend a couple of hours setting it all up and you will have a system that will record for 2 hours and the quality is very good for the price.
I use the above for track days and its been going strong for 4 years now. You can get more advanced systems here in the UK but the cost is very high, but you do get data on the screen and also longer recording etc.

These look very cool.
Don't want to sound negative about this, but is there a chance that these things could end up being used as evidence against you in an accident where you're at fault??
Or more's the point, should you be deemed to be driving dangerously (like doing one of those 'incredibly dangerous' overtaking manouvers people seem so scared about these days) by some busybody, what's stopping them from taking the video evidence to the police?
Part of the purpose of the device is in Fleet Use. Where its acts a "Spy In The Cab" - a lot like a more sophisticated Tacho. Its purpose then is to ensure good driver behaviour.
However - if you are a careful, competent driver and are confident in your own capabilities the opportunity to have irrefutable evidence showing it was NOT your fault may outweight how one feels about the risk of it showing that it *was* your fault.
Myself. I love such a system. I'd also love to be able to switch it off at the right times
. Mostly I'd be leaving it on.
