Motorway's at night
Discussion
These questions for the trafplod on this forum,
1, do you/can you use the motorway slip roads as 'hiding' perches to catch speeders?
2, would you proscicute a driver for travelling at lets say 85mph on the inside lane on an totally empty motorway at 3 in the morning with clear, dry ,good lighting conditions in a performance/ prestige car capble of 180 mph?
3,is it illigal to stop on the motorway to answer the call of nature? (on the hard shoulder of course!)
4, are you more leanient at night with minor driving offences on the motorway? (except in the case of roadworks, with the possibility of workers in the road) i.e going 60mph when signs indicate 50mph with no visible reason? as sometimes happens.

Whilst not a Trafpol, speaking from my own experience:
1. Generally no.
2. No.
3. Yes - unless you are Alex Ferguson.
4. Depends on the conditions, i.e rain, visibility. Night largely irrelvent.
War Story: Had Senator 24V borrowed as an area car one night. On motorway at 0300ish, seeing how fast it will go. Get up to 130mph and we realise we're not catching the car in front up! Pull over Mr. Respectable in his TVR Chimeara. He got some suitable advice. We couldn't book him - he was only doing what we were doing!

If he or she was blatently taking the pi55 then yes. The limit is 70 regardless of the time or the circumstances. If you decide to run the gauntlet with a police unit in the vicinity then you take your chance!

Yes. This is a stated case. Taking a comfort break is not an emergency even though it might be a personal one! The only exemption for this behaviour is if you happen to be the manager of a top rate football club who play mostly in the colour red!

No. You do not know what hazards are within the roadwork section (large holes, unguarded machinary etc). Any vehicle that takes the pi55 is usually dealt with. Would you ask that question of a camera?
Most Tafpol get fed up with the task of replacing cones that have been scuttled across the carriageway by bad driving. If a driver speeds into road works and cones have been disturbed, there could be an element of confusion where the driver leaves the safe area because of the random nature of cones left in the carriageway after they have been hit. Travelling at a reasonable speed will ensure that this is less likely to happen. Seen it, been there and got the T shirt!
You forget that the majority of car drivers are not concentrating on the but something else other than the task at hand. Driving is a secondary action to allow them to get from one place to another at the most convenient way possible. Many do not look further than the vehicle immediately ahead of them if there is one!!
Overall where minor stuff is concerned, it depends on
1. The nature of the offence committed, where and when
2. THE ATTITUDE OF THE DRIVER STOPPED

As Ya55erm said we are considering a car breaking the limit by 15 mile/h on an empty motorway - unaware of the Trafpol car concelaed up a slip road. Do we conclude that in your opinion "blatently taking the pi55 " means simply "breaking the limit" ?

You really should be the role model for all Traffic Officers, or should I say Roads Policing Unit Officers, IMHO.
Best wishes all,
Dave.

Totaly agree ,
sensible policing
In the 80s I was driving a 2.8i Capri home 02:00ish travelling over a ton ,on deserted dual carriageway noticed a car in my mirrors catching rapidly ,
came to turn off ........straight to 30mph driving at legal limit ..
blues on X PACK 2.8I granada plod gets out and told me with a grin .....glad to see your being sensible in built up areas sir...........now your not going to test that sticky 3rd peddle again .....
fellow pistonhead had a chat about Granadas v Capris and I was on my way
with a lot more respect for Trafpol

Some of the RPU guys I know have a 90 mph rule when conditions are good. They won't bother with you unless you are over that speed

Hello mate - You won't find me on the M27. I work on a city centre shift and I'm not traffic.
Defo need to organise a beer session sometime.
Well if i'm stopped, i'll just says its ok, i know your collegue Mungo. Should make them go away
Have to say not seen any marked or unmarked cars around that area on the last few trips i've made. Though I wish they'd patrol the dual carriageway that leads into Ringwood and get people who sit in the outside lane. It was very frustrating on Friday afternoon!
