Missus pranged our family car this morning.. nothing major, but I was wondering if there is something in the law about driving a car which has been damaged.. She drove into the back of someone (our next door neighbour actually !) at about 10 mph.. bonnet is all smashed up and headlight glass smashed. I seem to recall something about this being considered hazardous to drive on the road and hence illegal... Just thinking from the point of view of driving it to the body shop rather than getting it trailered...

thanks..

Suspect that if you drive in daylight, with gaffer tape over sharp pointy bits, and actually have an appointment, any right thinking BiB will wave you onwards.

Years ago I was rear ended and pushed into a crash barrier. (I hasten to add that I was stationary in a contraflow at the time due to stationary traffic ahead - I'd been there at least 30 seconds when a car hit the one behind me at an estimated speed of 70mph). Anyway, I was driving one of those environmentally unfreindly 4WD tanks that are really unsafe

There was a lot of panel damage, as you can imagine, and the FNS wing was badly damaged taking out the light cluster. BiB told me I could drive it home so long as I could safely make the journey before I would need lights.

If there is nothing intrinsically dangerous, then you should be able to drive the car to the repairers. If it is dangerous, arrange for the insurance company to collect it. A comprehensive policy will arrange collection anyway if you ask.

Yep, i know this is true from experience.

I was hit from behind several years ago on the way home from work. Fortunately for me there was a Dog Unit a few cars back who saw everything which made the blame game easier to play...

Anyhoo, Trafpol were summoned, the usual breath test & info exchanges were done, then i asked Mr Plod what would happen re my rear lights, which were in about 1000 pieces on the road.

He looked at his watch and told me to get it either home or to a garage before darkness fell.
