I was travelling to work along the M56 recently when I noticed a Honda Accord approaching rapidly from behind with alternating flashing main beam but no siren or flashing coloured lights. This was then followed at high speed by a blue Saab estate and then a very ordainary looking Ford Focus, both with flashing white lights but no sirens or coloured lights. Do the Police use these kind of unmarked cars or are they for some other purpose, thought doctors but dont they have flashing green lights? Any ideas?

When you say flashing white light do you mean alternating headlamp flash or a kojak-style flashing white light?

Funny.

Seriously, what do they actually do? Do they turn up at a scene and film it? Do they follow a police car to make sure they're doing their job properly?

Is that a word? I read it quite often in US written novels and it makes me cringe.

It's like when a bloke wears a hanky across his chops. One would ask "Is sir veiling?"

Don`t be ridiculous.

It`s when you buzz the entryphone on the castle and ask "Is Sir Vale In? Can he come out to play?

Bizarrely enough had the same thing scream past me today, Two nondescript cars with alternate flashing headlights and two very ordinary looking drivers.

Can't say they were being terribly covert though!

Then saw tonnes/Tons of plod out and about all day, I guess something must've been 'going down' as they say in films.
