Banned for two speeding offences?
Discussion
Paper today says we could now be banned for just two speeding offences.
45 in a 30 will now attract £100 fine and six points. 45 in a 30 sounds well over the the top ( think High Streets) but it is quite easy to miss a 30 sign buried in a hedge ( Wales in summer) and be nicked as we pass the sign from a national limit; a favourite trap point.
Yet again, reports tell us those "just over the limit" wil be given two points whereas at present we are given three points for speed in excess of 10% of the limit plus 2 mph.
Paper calls this measure Draconian. Quite.

Yep, especially as several 40's I travel on to work have had those double speed measuring strips on them, and the local chippy had a petition to lower one of the 40's to a 30 zone (I DIDN'T sign)...
I hate the fact appropriate speed for the conditions is ignored. If the limit is 40 and 30 is more appropriate at ONE point or section, then you'd drive 30mph by nature there anyway, yet they have to lower the limit to enforce common sense?
Yet they blanket an entire section to a new lower limit!
It's like the national limit country roads. I don't drive 60mph ALL the time, alot of the time 20mph is leathal, but I don't need signs ever 25m suggesting the ideal maximum speed... 60, 55, 45, 30, 20 into a corner for example.
Existing road markings and "reading the road" skills have worked for decades, yet today we seem to be falling back to a rule or clause and miles of red tape for even the most simple tasks!
Stupid STUPID bloody provisions for lowest common denominator!

Aye, but this would involve people thinking for themselves and taking responsibility, skills that are seemingly in short supply these days.

I agree, and these are also skills which would need to be judged by a police officer as oppose to a camera to say what is safe.
Not yet in force Tafia as far as I am aware but coming in the Road Safety Bill that received its second reading yesterday. Should also have graduated points in a suggested :
Low Penalty (2 points/40 - 30mph to 39mph).......up to 83mph in a 70
Standard Penalty (3points/£60 40 -44 in a 30mph....84 to 93 in a 70 and
Higher penalty (6 points/£100fine) over 45 in a 30mph over 94 in a 70.
Coming to a town near you shortly unless they have changed their minds.

So does this mean anything above 30 and below 39 in a 30 gets 2 points? Madness if it does. 1 mph? Width of a speedo needle.

Of course they do have to catch you legally....

For those who may have drifted just a bit over, deliberately or otherwise, the 2 points will be better than 3, if points one must receive at all. So for 80 mph on the M6 in 'Callaghan land' it will be 2 points not 3.
For those who make 'serious progress', then it's going to be 6 points every time with 2 strikes and you're out..
What is not so clear, however, unless I've missed it, is that for over 94 on a m'way or d/c it's going to be 6 points, whereas currently for over 96 it's a court appearance and a possible ban. Has the 96 and a ban now gone away a bit?

This is to placate the populas. The goverment have listen to all those complaints from leafy suburbs about just over the limit in a 30, people who think it is so unfair they were caught, when others go much faster. Seeing a chance to get more money they reduce these lower figures, less complaints, and then up the points and the fines to make up the cash flow, and at the same time look to the dumb bastards who belive the bollox written about speed kills that they are doing it for road safety.

Strange... exceed speed limit by 30% in an urban area and get 2 points and a £40 fine, exceed it by 30% on a motorway and you're knocking on the door of 6 points / £100. Even stranger when you consider 'hit me at 40mph and there's an 80% chance I'll die!!!!' Makes more sense if you believe the government doesn't give a
about safety and is far more concerned with fleecing the motorist some more of course...d-man said:

Even stranger that the government is happy to make even tougher a system which is consistently catching the statistically safer driver...oh and making anonimity an even more attractive proposition...

Strange Indeed, one could almost be mistaken into thinking that they have devised this system with a view to maximising revenue, of course they wouldn't do that, would they?..........
if banned the simple solution is....................sign on the dole and turn to crime to supplement your income
point one: the Government lose your Taxes and NI
point two: if caught for criminal activity you only get a slap on the wrist and told not to do it again nowadays don't you?
what have you got to lose?

My point if I ever (touch wood won't be) go to court for a ban from driving.
"well, you'll loose out, tax, NI, fuel duty, vat on interest on savings, loss of productivity of company I work for, less household expenditure and fuelling of the economy, WHILE you pay my dole, support my other household expenses etc etc!"
Is it really worth banning me for actually causing NO perceived or actual harm to anyone, and said event may as well have never have happened for all it matters?
Ah, you have to love the way that as time goes by you realise it's less about people, and safety, and harm, but more about taking away our freedoms, controlling us, and taking more of our hard earned in the process!
Revolt anyone? I can't see this country going anywhere good over the next 5 years with Bliar and his cretins running the place!

I have read a lot on the new European Soviet which is being created and your last two paragraphs are right on the money.
