licence points & dvla

how long do the dvla take to get your licence back when you have points taken off,is it worth bothering or do insurance companies only care how long ago you got them.
I work abroad frequently and need my licence to hire a car.

There is no need to remove them.

As you have already said, it is how long ago that counts.

Anything over 4 years unless drink driving will not affect insurance.
