Do not "have a go" ...

is the recent advice to Joe Public following the arrest of a man who leapt to the defence of a woman being assaulted. In the Kafkaesque world that is modern UK policing, the thug was not detained but the white knight was.
This led to a police spokesperson saying that the public should not intervene.
Let that police spokesperson hope that they do not find themself at the mercy of somr thug whilst Joe Public stands around and watches, or that their partner does not find themself in the position of the unfortunate woman being assaulted.
Streaky

Indeed, apologies to any good BiB on here but ...
Clearly the officer who made that comment is a complete numpty, then again, I suppose if the police were doing their job (we) the public wouldn't have to do it for them ...
Sorry, but this is outrageous, how could they even consider nicking the bloke, what's up with common sense.
It's the same everwhere, about a year ago I was attacked by a bloke about twice as big as me (slightly unfair), fortunately I was able to successfully defend myself and escaped without a scratch, probably due totally to the fact I have a Karate brown belt.
The police wouldn't even take a statement ... The fact I pointed out that the next victim might not be so luckly made no difference.
I used to have the utmost respect for the Police, but that incident (and one other time where I needed their assistance) means that now quite frankly, in general, I find them a complete and utter waste of time.

Given the fact that you might have done your attacker some damage, and in the light of the original post, perhaps this was a common sense BiB doing you a favour? Not trying to be silly, just a thought...

Battering an attacker in a defensive situation, even if defending someone else is always the right thing to do.
The cops doing jack about the attacker and putting the boot into the defender just shows what kind of nuthouse this country has become.
Whats next? No right to defence at all? They may as well.....cowards the lot of them, gutless cowards for dereliction of duty.

Targets. Instead of doing the job to protect the public, they have to do the job to meet targets. Joe public is easy meat, the average crim has been round the block and knows their "rights", and has a laywer who will assert them.
It's lunacy. When, and how, is the balance going to get tipped back in favour of the victim?

Streaky, my google skills are not up to much today, do you have a link to the original story?
I would agree that things are tipped way too far in favour of the scum these days, but could this incident be a case of someone going too far?
I've seen plenty of cases in clubs and pubs where an "incident" between a man and woman has been totally misunderstood and some poor bloke has been half killed by a neandhertal attempting to demonstrate to the lady how much of a hard hero he is.
Of course, blanket comments such as "don't get involved" will not do the police any favours...

How sad...
Surely we should all take some responsability for the world around us, I suppose the Police would rather we should all just "not get involved" - maybe they should ban Crimewatch.
I would always try to help in a situation like this - I would rather end up in a cell having tried to help, as opposed to at home, not involved, reading about the victim in the paper.

As ever, there will probably be more to this than meets the eye. I've been there....T-shirt etc.... Usually one drunk bloke brawls with another with little outcome. Drunk mate then lays into other drunk bloke causing serious injury. "I was just protecting me mate......"
I've dealt with countless occassions of yobs who have got a well deserved smack from Joe Public/Doorstaff prior to Police arrival. Usually when they've been released from custody having been charged themselves they want to make a complaint to the Inspector about the Police/Joe Public for snotting them.
My usual response ends in off, they should count themselves lucky I wasn't the custody officer else they'd be kept in for Court over the weekend and if they don't vacate my Police Station pronto they'll be spending more time in it than they planned.

Couple of years ago, I steamed in to help out when an attempted robbery at a supermarket ended up with a staff member kidnapped. I detained the get-away driver after he crashed. At his trial, the judge commented that not enough people got involved these days. In his chambers afterwards, I pointed out to his lordship that the reason might be linked to the fact that having arrested the guy, the first thing that the local plod did was listen to his complaint that I had hurt him!

When Blairy Poppins managerialism and targetism gets blown up. If 'the way forward' is to get 30 administrative and trivial detectors (great crime solving) rather than one murder (pathetic) it's human nature that people will behave that way.
How much more of these ridiculous policies will we hear of? If it's not drivers being demonised and shafted like some never-ending piggy bank or Enablement Act-type legislation being passed, it's the police telling people to stand by and watch others be assaluted else face the full force of the law. It's just bloody madness, the right-thinking people of this fair isle seem to throw their hands up and then forget it about. There doesn't seem to be a way of stopping it. I feel angry, politically impotent and disenfranchined.
