Frowning signs taken for cameras

Speeding motorists are wrecking road signs that frown at them if they go too fast, in the mistaken belief they are speed cameras, council bosses claim. The so-called "Smiling Sids" were installed on some roads on Teesside as part of a pilot project.

But for the third time in a matter of months, devices have been vandalised, forcing Redcar and Cleveland Council to replace them at £2,000 a time.

The council said the signs are not used to issue fines and do not have cameras.

The authority's road safety officer Mike Hall said: "People think that the Smiley Sids are a speed camera when they are not.

Smashing panels

"It is there merely as a safety and educational tool and they have been shown to reduce the number of road accidents.

"We only put these devices where local people ask for them.

"We have lost a few of these now, the latest in Eston and we just can't understand why these should be vandalised.

"People are climbing up them and smashing the back panels. We would appeal for help in trying to track these people down."

Mr Hall said the devices would continue to be replaced.

Leaflets are now being distributed to homes and schools in an effort to highlight the problem and the safety benefits of the devices.

Does Mr Hall have any proof that motorists are doing this and not the local scallies?

Seems to me like a bit of finger pointing to portray the motorist as a speed obsessed unsafe lunatic, despite new methods of reducing speed that don't incur fines and points.

I can see the scamera press release now....

"Despite the removal of cameras and their replacement by signs, motorists continue to be nasty kitten eating thugs and are smashing the signs up. This shows that despite us scammers 'listening to the motorist' and removing cameras, motorists continue to be the devil and should all go to the 7th level of hell for owning and driving cars - especially 4x4s"

....or perhaps I'm being paranoid

Does anyone know if Smiley Sids record the speeds of passing cars? Or count the number of drivers who set them off?

Although I have no linkular supporting evidence, I am led to believe that VAS (aka Vehicle Activated Signs) are more effective at controlling traffic speeds than cameras.

Certainly in our village (in Germany) they work a damn sight better than a camera, as people driving after the flash just say "sod it" and keep the right foot buried...showing them what actual speed they're travelling at is a reminder and certainly works well and usually slows them down..... These things are put up about 2/3 times a year and are in place for around 3-4 days....
