Thank god this won't be phased in for a while - it'll be the end for me of speeding in the UK with a french licence as protection.

It also raises the possibility of licence loss due to the opinion of a pissed cop in a "less civilised" part of Europe. Fecking europlod is going to screw up our lives even more.

Harmonisation is acoming as I have often said.

No doubt will be tied in with a whole realm of Regs regarding points, disqualification on an EEC basis. Points in France valid in UK etc.

Already coming.

Under the road safty bill you will be able to be issued with FPNs on foreign licences.
A ghost record will be created for you at DVLA and under totting you will still be disqualified on that ghost licence where you reach 12 points in 3 years.

Don't think having a French licence will protect you from prosecution for speeding or any other offence at the moment. If you get stopped and can provide a UK address that I can verify you will just get reported and summoned to court. If I can't prove your UK address then I will arrest you and deal with it direct to court via a custody suite.

Maybe, but I recall reading an article recently that stated that British plod only bother going through the process of prosecuting a foreign driver for very excessive speeds, court appearance, etc. Minor speeding is just a talking to. Anyway, for the moment with my froggy registration plate the UK gatsos are no threat to me and I take delight in wasting their film - one day there will be a posse waiting for me at the entrance to the tunnel I guess, with handcuffs.

That's why the road safety bill is changing the FPN system to include foreign drivers.
I would add (before the cynics get in) that the reason the change was forced though, was because of an ECHR case brought by a foreign driver who was forced to go to court instead of being offered an FPN (for a speed that she could have anticipated a FPN for in normal circumstances.)

Always been case with French und Swiss - they "do" each other....

But - they would have to have the same system - und in Switzerland und Germany - you get fine und not points for marginal blips. Only .. Swiss fine ist means tested - more dosh yoou earn - more you pay.

Ist why rebel like me choose to marry foreigner und live in lovely Lake District

Yawn.

Car is either stolen, cloned or a £20 banger. Don't turn up for court. Sorted.

Don't you people realise that the defining characteristic of criminals is that they don't obey the law?

Becareful...As much as I don't like most scameras.....Your plates will have been put on the ANPR system, and CAN be read by the ANPR.
I thought that ANPR and such could only recognise the standard UK font, which was the Government's excuse for continuing to insist on the ugly British font with no exceptions?

Also, lambo cop, were you saying above that every time that you pull a speeding driver who doesn't have a UK address (Continental driving his/her own car on holiday, American in rental car, etc.) you put them in gaol? Seems a bit harsh.

I was just going to post a response and say no way does driving while disqualified always lead to a prison sentence. Instead I have spent the last half hour digging around the home office website and for 2003 in the magistrates court for Driving while disqualified I find the following figures:

Found guilty: 53881
Unsuspended sentence: 17625
Fully Suspended: 393

From:
www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/pdfs05/hosb0605supp.pdf

The statistics make for very illuminating reading and I shall be perusing them for some time to come.

Mean while back in the real world, you've got to try *very* hard
to get to prison these days.

Merely not paying fines won't do it. ABH won't do it,
drunk driving doesn't do it, breaking the rules of being
out on tag doesn't do it, driving while disqualified doesn't
do it, driving with no tax, no MOT and a dangerous vehicle
doesn't do it.

Beleive me, I have practical experience that none of the above,
even all together, will be enough to get you into prison.

Sorted as I believe the modern saying is. Luckily, I get to pay
for all this through my taxes.

And even if you do, you get half off anyway.

I notice they don't have categories for over three months.

So that's six weeks in easy peasy category C prison, then.

I've had longer holidays than that.

Great food, supervised shower visits, all the TV you can eat
and a really tasty middle class social worker to fuss all over
you as well. All you have to do is to tell her what she
wants to hear.

Easier than living at home for some folks.

Just offering the benefit of my practical experience.

Sad to say, but merely not paying fines does not get you into
prison these days.
