Ist a "kerbside" .. has sensors in the road up to und beyond it. I think the sensors start from one of warning signs ... but am not 100% sure of this ... ist based on what my eyes see at Ings This ist the type enforcing the little 40 mph bit in Ings.....

I've noticed these on the M5 (Bristol) and a few other places ... they did make me wonder as they look more like red light cameras ... I was going to ask about them, but you've answered before I typed.

As an aside to this, do the Monitrons flash during daylight if triggered? I ask as I was going up the M5 from Weston yesterday and some twonk in a new BMW 5 series (say no more) went banging through at a highly dangerous 60mph i'd say, in the 40mph roadworks and I didnt see a flash at all.

This little beastie ist a "Speedcurb" aka Monitron - I spell wrong.. but you know my spelling May be a toppest scientist (per my boss - he must think so - am still employed despite blowing up a lab ... All I did was .. und it started flashin' und foamin' ) - but my spelling? I admit - "Not in drawer ..

Well .. not quite purrfekt then Did use spellcheck when first posted.. but ist too much bother.. I correct every word almost..

Anyway... the speedcurb only flash at night - not by day.. since never been flashed.. am good girly really ) - led to believe ist a pink one here..

(Und German ones are always a pink or red. flash.. . if not.. you have case to shout "foul" per "radarfalle" but then again .. not sure if this ist urban resd misty myth
- but worth a check out...

It photo from rear.. uses sensors monitoring pressure... have been to take another look at Ings... they appear to start at the painted "40 mph" ... und extend to the normal marks after the scam... the sub-marinated one ist as oily as the olive oil in the submarination...

The others which use these sensors are....

Traffipho - look like red light cam und Speedmaster (the tempo version of speedcurb und Traffiphot..

SPECS - different type of nasty - photos vehicle at start und then on.. if average speed ist above limit between the pair .. ist NIP...

Truvelo also has sensor strips [ uses infra-red flash...

GATSO ist the most common of course.. as we know - measuring with radar...

Watchmans - they look like red lights but are video ones really und can be accessed remotely..

I've noticed a few of these around the greater Bristol area in the last couple of weeks, including those in the M5 roadworks. However, all of the ones I've seen have road markings as per GATSOs.

Surely, if they were SPECS they wouldn't need this type of road marking?

I get the impression that there might be a bit of misinformation in the story - I'm thinking of that story that did the rounds a few years ago, those traffic monitoring camera on blue poles were SPECS.

Can anybody shed any light?

SPECS are on a big blue pole - there ist one main monitor und two other monitoring doo-dahs attached.

There are photos of all these on "Speed Bible's" site

I think he might mean the blue trafficmaster type monitors with a bluee cctv style 'camera'. Specs genearlly have the blue lampost with the yellow camera and what looks like the motorola symbol on the pole upright.

News Item said:
The site is the eighth highest accident hot spot in London, with eight people killed or seriously injured in crashes in the 30 months leading up to June 2005.

These figures have prompted the London Safety Camera Partnership (LSCP) to mount the new camera outside Oriental City in place of the old Gatso system. Traditional cameras use film, and have a limited capacity to take shots.

Hmmmmm, the old analogue cameras obviously weren't cutting accidents as casualties are still high.

So what do the brains at LSCP do???.....

Put new digital cameras in!!!

Oh yes, such a safety asset!!

Nevermind eh, as long as the pennies keep rolling in!!!!

Sorry WC - didn't make the post clear. Yes, SPECS are on blue poles, but so are simply traffic flow monitoring cameras. That was what I meant.

More information on these new little blighters is here:-

www.speedcam.co.uk/gatso6.htm

Doesn't mention average speed though, simply digital photography.

Redspeed (any variety) is a point camera – it is not used in tandem with a second cam at different location (unlike SPECS). Redspeed are not approved to measure average speed between cameras, so the article is wrong (there is a lot of misinformation out there).

For whoever is feeling pedantic: it will measure the average speed between the sensor strips.

rs1952u,
corroborative road markings are not necessary for this type of camera, it is approved for use without the need for a means of photographic secondary measurement (but the software can allow it).

J1mmyD,
Redspeed can be one or both of Redguard (red light jumping) and Speedcurb (speeding).

Wildcat,
Truvelos use a magenta flash, not IR (they are visibly blinding - believe me)

Agreed, the 'this is london' article is full of errors, problem is that some people blindly believe what the media produces. Whoever wrote the article needs to do their research better!
The dicussion on if these type of cameras measured average speed has been discussed before on pistonheads but these were in relation to the identical redspeed/monotron digital cameras in the Limehouse Link tunnel in east london.
They don't measure average speed full stop!
