Calling Paul Smith - Hit The Brakes
Discussion
My local paper "The Bucks Herald" front page is an article about how every major road in and out of Aylesbury could have its speed limit cut by up to 20mph in a bid to save lives and stop accidents.
I thought you might like to contact them and comment. They can be found here - www.aylesburytoday.co.uk or by email - editorial@bucksherald.co.uk
I'm in the process of drafting a letter which I will post here for comment before I send it.
Regards,
Phill

I'm on the road this week. I'll have a look at it when I get back to the office.
Basically locals need to raise formal objections. I think there's a procedure on the ABD website somewhere.
It's also being discussed on the Safe Speed forums:

Speed Limits How they are set and your Right to Object
Stupid laws and regulations are so widely ignored that they become meaningless. In fact, maybe we should welcome these extremely low limits as then everyone will ignore them and they will fall into total disrepute. There are now so many petty regulations that many areas of the law are rapidly falling into disrepute in addition to motoring regulations. For example, I am quite capable of wiring extra electrics in my home and workshop and have just done so. Apparently that's also illegal so I can expect a visit from the 'DIY Police' soon. I also connected up my new gas cooker, on the basis that if I can design, develop and install ultra-high-pressure hydraulics on aircraft and cars, I can certainly connect up and test a low-pressure gas connection properly. Again, I believe it's against the law.
This entire 'nanny-state' situation is now really beginning to seriously 'p***-off' so many people that the laws will simply be ignored. If drivers continue to be disqualified in increasingly large numbers 'Driving Whilst Disqualified' will just become another minor offence with the chances of detection rated very low.
All this, surely, leads to disrespect for the law and a sea-change in our society due to the 'criminalisation' of a large proportion of the population, especially those who pay their taxes and actually contribute to our country.

They aren't irrelevent, because even if they aren't enforced now they can be later on. And you can't complain then, after all the law has been like that for ages and if people are going to keep flouting the law they have only got themselves to blame when they eventually get caught ...

Actually, it isn't. It's quite legal to work on your own gas installations, providing that you are a "competent person". What isn't legal is to work on someone elses gas installation.
You're more-or-less right about wiring and Part P, though. According to reasonable estimates, that's going to save less than one life a year, and may actually cost lives. I stocked up on cable in the old wiring colours, so can happily ignore Part P.

Do they seriously mean to cut the 40 limits to 20 and the 30 limits to 10?
Surely no-one could be that stupid.
You've never had anything to do with Local Government then.
It wouldn't surprise me to see a MINUS 10 Speed Limit ....
What, you mean we'd have to drive in reverse?

Phil,
That's a quality letter you wrote there.
I assume that's exactly as you wrote it?
K
Yes exactly what I wrote. I copied the letter to my local counciller(who i've now upset by asking too many awkard questions!) and to David Lidington my MP.
My counciller has another week to reply to my current email before I approach the papers with my unanswered questions.
