Any Gardai drivers here?
Discussion
Just wanted to see what the driver training is now In Irealnd for the Gardai. I was having a discussion with a Garda a few years back about the driver training and expected to hear about skid pads and the like, but he said that they didn't believe in skidding or sliding about and if you got in a skid you were obviously not driving properly, so they did not train for that eventuality. I was somewhat shocked. It seems the major stress was on being in a "responsive" gear, that is not ever using top gear and always keeping the revs up whilst in pursuit. Of course with the cars they had to work with this was probably the only way they could hope to keep up decent progress.
Apparently the really advanced drivrs could take some skid pad training, but I find the fact that the basic course overlooked skidding appalling, especially in light of the slippy road surfaces commonly encountered in Ireland.
