Insurance whilst at a dealer
Discussion
I've got this, errr, friend who owns a caravan...
He's put it up for sale at a local dealer on sale or return but the contract states that he has to insure it while it's on the dealer's property.
Is that legally binding? If this joker has a break in or the place burns down or something, why on earth should I, errr sorry, my friend make a claim for it from his own policy?
Am I right in thinking it's just a cheapskate dealer who's trying to keep his insurance down by trying to put anyone off claiming?

I'd have thought that like any contract you enter into you should be happy with it first.
The dealer is offering to let you (friend) display the caravan, no doubt for a set fee, on the understanding that it's insured whilst it's there. He could also stipulate you must hop up and down on one leg with a rose between your teeth if he wanted - it's his bit of land and if you don't like the contact he's offered you're free to take your caravan elsewhere to sell it.

That's fair enough, and I've not signed the contract because I'm not happy about this or the extortionate amount of my money he wants to pimp off the top
However, as a general rule, I would have thought he'd have to by law take responsibility for my property whilst it was under his control?

That's Dealers for you - if they can screw you for a penny .......... Found some caravan dealers worse than car dealers as they seem to be further apart so less competition.
Suppose it's different if your 'van is there for a service or repair - then I would hope for his sake he has insurance.
IIH, there's some good forums around with For Sale/Wanted sections and there's always the good old Freeads.
Hope you sell it soon.

Oh it'll sell privately I'm sure. It's pretty much new really. That's what was so galling about his greed. The thing turned up shining like a new pin and he slotted it straight into his lineup out the front then started talking about his overheads, cleaning (it was spotless), warranty (it still has manufacturer's one) etc.
The insurance scam was the last straw actually. When I told him what figure I wanted back which still allowed him several hundred quid if not a grand (for zero effort, it's a very sought after 'van) his little greedy pound-sign eyes wanted blood too. So he's ended up with fack all.
Actually it's a shame we're not all a bit more like me rather than rolling over and getting shafted because we'd end up getting better deals.
