Have just had one person die near me at Hedge End after his Toyota Supra was chased by a Police car and left the road and overturned.
What is the general concensus of opinion on PHs about Police chases?

I like those Starsky and Hutch police chases when the cars race around after each other.

Damned if they do, damned if they don’t.

As a rule driver speeding off in rush hour through town with kiddies everywhere do what you can but don’t push it.

Any other time of day nail the f*****s.

It’s the sort of thing that can only really be assessed according to the circumstances at the time and that you can’t really set out a strict set of rules.

tough titty in my opinion. the idiot shouldnt have run.

I dont like to see innocent bystanders get involved though. I think the police should have some type of device to disable the car as quick as possible...a bazooka or anti tank missile maybe?

I don't generally have a lot of sympathy for people who kill themselves whilst trying to out run a traffic car, but it's awful when an innocent dies as a result of one of these chases.

Question is do we let them go and get away with it or do we chase them? It's a tough call and not one I'd like to have to make.

If you've got nothing to hide why run? The ones being chased could have stopped at any time.

I'm pretty sure his death will be investigated very closely to ensure that the officers' actions were/weren't at fault. If you or I have a crash, then very little happens compared to if one is driving a car with blue lights on and a crash happens nearby.

Please explain the difference. How do you "Follow" a stolen car that is not going to stop when you put blues and twos on ?? If it was your pride and joy I was behind, after the driver had just raped your partner and killed your mother and father should I just follow ?? Or should I initiate a pursuit ??

I am a pursuit-trained driver, and most of pursuit training is focused on restraint and not allowing red mist to take over. Even in the scenario above, if I felt the pursuit was getting dangerous I would terminate it immediately.

Its not *you* we have to worry about. Its the nutter running.

Why would anyone try to run? Cops have helicopters. There are LOTS of cops. There is *NO WAY* anyone seriously being sought after is going to get away by driving. Stealth - possibly. Driving fast - no.

Mad.

Must be a tough call to decide to stop chasing because of what you've seen the car in front doing...

They are a necessary evil. If the perp gets toasted and it's just the perp then it's merely Darwin in action. The only problem is if innocent bystanders get hurt. Whatever you feel about our police "chases" they are still far more controlled than the American versions.

What if the driver kills his/her passengers because they wouldn’t stop?
I think the police should back off completely if there are passengers in with the driver.

I think you have seen too many police chase movies.

If I was sitting on my motorcycle on any urban, semi urban road and a police car was behind me, I guarantee if I knew the area I would lose them in less than 3 minutes. I'm not sure I would have to break the speed limit by much to do it.

All due respect to police training but they aren't supermen. If you are within their sights long enough for them to initiate their team then you would be likely sunk, but on a modern motorcycle and using its advantage over a car they would be very hard pressed to aprehend. And before you comment I don't think I am a superman either.

I would like to see the figures for initiated police persuits and captures. I don't think its anywhere near as high as you assume.

It was in Tollbar Way, in the part with fields at the side.
I'm sure that we will hear more about what happened, on the Southern News.

I would rather the police attempted to apprehend the criminal than sit and watch him drive away, especially if it stolen.

If it is nicked, then the more car thieves killed in these pursuits the better IMO.

Agreed. They have very limited ariel resources. If the chopper is elsewhere, or fuelling, or broken, all matey boy needs do is drive like an utter loon in a built up area, the persuit gets pulled and then just park up and walk away from the car.

So would you be prepared to pay for a Californian (LA I believe) type of approach.

Been noticed that the scrotes try everything for n minutes after initiation of a pursuit where n minutes = time to get the paraffin parrot onto scene.

Therefore it has been suggested / implemented (??) that they have a chopper permanently aloft to reduce n minutes to a very short time.

Would you be prepared to pay for this?

Re: my 2p people who are saying follow and not pursue. Try standing up and talking. Whilst still talking sit down on a chair. Bet your voice has gone muffled?

paraffin parrot

Last I read on the subject, there was talk of efficient light aircraft with excellent optics and a long loiter time. These are not only cheaper than bellywoppers, they can stay airbourne for longer.

As long as the optics are good enough for the plane to operate at sufficient altitude, the lack of hover is not a huge disadvantage.
