Blair, the Metropolitan police commissioner, has signed off a report by his force’s traffic unit which shows that black people account for 46% of all arrests generated by new automatic numberplate recognition (ANPR) cameras.
I cant see the police can be blamed for 46% of the people been caught are black. I dont see the problem in just saying a higher proportion of black people commit car crime.

I wonder what the breakdown of men vs women was, and if that's not 50%, why is there no outcry there. This will be an opportunity for some pretty unpleasant things to be said by any number of people but is ultimately a distraction.
That is called Postive Discrimination.
We can say 95% of men are crooks.. BUT, we couldn't say 95% of women are.... Lovely, isn't it.. Same as we can have MP candidate lists made up only of women. BUT if you did that with men only, and deliberately, it would be a problem.
Lentil eating, sandal wearing, guardian reading lefties........

Not at all, I do read the Guardian and have been known to wear sandals. But I
ing HATE lentils. PLUS this PC
is a pinko-liberal thing. I have no problem with stating the truth about statistics

I cant say I blame you. I posted the Times article because it seems to me that the Met seem desperatley afraid of being non PC even when the system appears so automated that it couldnt be BIB targeting ethnic minorities.

Since the ANPR system is wholly impartial (colour-blind), why keep records of the ethnicity of those arrested? How many were homosexual, how many left-handed, how many ginger?
That is a fair question...
I belive they have to keep records of people questioned/arrested to comply with Race laws. i.e to make sure they do not arrest too many people of colour. Think this was mainly introduced after the lawrence report.
Serving police officers may be able to correct me.

So how, if the APNR system is automatic rather than selective, can keeping statistics make sure there is no racial imbalance in those found at fault?

I cant see the police can be blamed for 46% of the people been caught are black. I dont see the problem in just saying a higher proportion of black people commit car crime.
Well, so what ?
Would I be correct in assuming that the plate is linked to some database (say of stolen cars) and this is used to generate arrests ?
If so, it is independent and colourblind.
About the only ways you could rig it are (i) only put ANPR in areas with a very high black population or (ii) rig the program so it checks ethnicity. Neither are plausible.

There is another way of looking at it - if 46% were black then 54% weren't![]()

...but blacks make up a very small percentage of the population, so the statistics can be useful as a guide (similar to figues used by insurance companies to judge likelyhood of an accident).

The point I was trying, not very well admittedly, to put across was that while the figures may be accurate the way they are interpretted or phrased can put a totally different complexion (no pun intended) on things.
