Hi chaps

I've notice that in my local area S Herts / N London at 2 "safety" camera sites there's been 2 fatalities just recently.

We kept getting bombarded with BS stats about how road deaths are down at Camera sites - well certainly not in these cases

They're not alone. There was once a headline on the Lancs scammers website saying that speed camera policy was successful despite an increase in road deaths. Absolutely disgraceful. Crashes are mostly unrelated to speed, and fatalties continue to go up and down, GATSO or no GATSO. There's been a relative plateau now in road deaths for several years, and any small decrease is welcome but more than accounted for by better and safer car design and improved medical care.

Better safety features in the cars account for a substantial reduction in the KSIs IMHO.

They have a couple on the A24 near where I live, which were installed to stop some major crashes that happened outside a garden centre, which is on a crossroads across the dual carriageway. Now, people drive in all manner of ways and you get those that slow down to 10mph below the limit two miles before they get to the cameras, usually in the outside lane, and those that hit their brakes, enter the grid at spot on 60 and accelerate out. Trouble here, is they are not looking at the junction but their dashboards. Then the traffic just gets clusterf**ked for the next three miles with everyone jostling for road. And how slowing traffic down from 70 to 60 makes any difference is beyond me. For my part I find it hard to see the safety gains. Apparently, according to the big yellow signs, there were 33 incidents in the last year (whatever an incident might be?), although the sign hasn't been updated for the last two years, so recent stats are unavailable. Probably nothing to shout about as they'd be busily backslapping themselves and putting signs up everywhere at our expense.

As an aside, I did see a Vectra van a while back crashed into one of the big yellow signs, which is at the end of a half mile straight run, so the bod was obviously paying far too much attention to road casualty spiel than the road itself. True story. The one time in my life when I really wished I had a camera.
