I need to tax the car and my insurance expires at midday on 1/6/2006. So, it will be taxed on the day the disk is issued but the insurers don't send out a new certificate until the old one expires which means the woman in the post office might get a bit arsey as the certificate doesn't cover the whole day. In fact I know she will as Mrs BliarOut works in the post office AND she's got PMT at the moment

In preperation for the foolhardy act of argueing with a pre-menstrual Post Office employee is my certificate of insurance sufficient and lawfully correct to tax the car?

I say it should be as the certificate will be valid at 9:00 AM but a definitive answer I can quote to her would be good.

Wish me luck!

Just supposing you had the new cert in your hands and went to tax the car at 9:01 AM. They couldn't issue you with a tax disc because you won't have proof that the car is insured for another few hours.
You'd have to show them your 'old' cert.

Try an online renewal now.

Insurance database when interogated by DVLA may show vehicle Insured?

It helps if you are sleeping with one

The GF will put it through herself today but reckons her manager wouldn't do it. Strange, but there must be a definitive answer as to what time the insurance has to be valid till.

I've lost count of the arguments I have had with the silly woman in my local PO. MOT had a week to go, so she argued about that! and another time wanted to see the MOT of a 12 month old car (it had my reg L1 OFF) took ages to explain that one to the bint.

A friend of mine whose father is a very senior civil servant said that the Post Office never wanted the car tax business anyway, hence the "anti" attitude and hair-splitting so common among their staff.

It really pisses me off when I'm trying to give the Government (even more) money, and the b*st*rds won't accept it for some trivial nonsense reason. I suspect that's the reason for the armoured glass - not because of thugs with no necks and Pretty Pollys over their heads, but to protect the PO clerks from enraged motorists.

That really p155es me off - the sodding form states on it exactly what documentation they need to see but oh no - Post Office Dorris knows best

When I went to get my tax last time the bint there refused to because I didn't have an MOT (the car was 18monthts old) and also didn't have the V5 there and also because the insurance certificate looked dodgy Well it would wouldn't it..it was a lilac colour that Tesco use (but Tesco don't do motor insurance...*sigh*)

I believe they do this just to be difficult as their lives are SO inadequate. Never mess with local post offices - they are like bad tempered moggies with claws out.

Insurance certificate has to be valid at the time of issue but the PO would most likely want it valid all day. As I see it as long as it's valid at the TIME of issue of the certificate then it should be ok. It was just a pre-emptive question in case I hit a snag. The GF sorted it now so I didn't have to queue

the insurance has to cover the day the tax disc would come into force, so if your insurance runs out today but the tax disc would be for the 1st June then its a no go from the po.

Had this happen to me last time I came back to the UK for a weekend, new insurance cert hadn't turned up yet, that caused me some problems!!

This was the same PO that GAVE me a tax disc for my pre 72 car I was sorning with no insurance, mot etc etc.
