Car Cloning and Unfair Fines
Discussion
Check the BBC news site below for a story about "so called" theft-proof plates.

Have any PHers been victim to a fine for something a cloned car did?
If so, how much hassel was required to fix the problem.
If I was a victim of such a fine I might be tempted just to pay up, rather than go to court, be insulted by the magistrate as a liar and maybe risk jail. What say y'all?

FFS It doesn't take a genius to "steal" the number by writing it down and having new plates made up.
If the government thinks this is imposible due to "needing" a V5C to get new plates, they're sorely mistaken...
And haven't heard of this: www.fancyplates.com/
Actually, the real issue here is the unfairness and lack of reason associated with using a camera that reads the number plate, which in turn could be fake. The onus would be on the registered user of that plate to prove inocence. This would be guilt until proven otherwise, in other words - a smack in the face of freedom and justice. It makes me angry just thinking about it.

"The Department for Transport said strict standards had been set for the plates, such as ensuring it takes at least three minutes to prise them from a car."
And how much damage has been done to your paintwork by the scrotes screwdriver during these three minutes? Jeez....
I read about some "tamper proof" number plate screws, but all it means is that scrote will move onto the next car, it won't stop the overall theft levels. AND said scrote might just get frustrated and grab the edge of the plate and pull hard, snapping all the mounting hardware off your bumper and costing £hundreds.

When my car turned up they had screwed up the number plates (I was being pedantic and didn't want those stupid euro markings on them) and proceeded to hand me the messed up plates in case I needed them for future use. So if anyone is interested I've got a spare set of plates (still with cellophane on) sitting in my lounge.

Sorry, why would they steal the plates? Just get a dodgy mate to produce new plates to place on their stolen/cloned car... Sooo, that is going to do squat to stop it happening..
What REALLY concerns me though is the last line in The Times, The Department admits that car cloning will remain a serious problem until plates with embedded microchips that can be read by roadside beacons are in use. Tests are underway..
Are they serious????? Tracking the exact movements of us ?!?!?!? FFS 1984 was a book not a f***king manifesto you stupid tw*ts.

or is it a case of
me "i've recieved a nip for x but it wasn't me
somone must have stolen my reg plates"
faceless government dept " did you have the approved anti theft plates ? yes
must be you then pay up"
don't they realise how easy it is to have plates made up without any documentation

"The plates, which break into pieces ..."
Right, so the plates will be designed with built in fault lines and will break up and fragment very easily. So it will become perfectly normal for cars to drive around with partially fragmented plates following very minor incidents - parking knock, shopping trolley, caught your knee on the plate as you passed the car...
Some people might find it useful to deliberately break bits off their number plates, feigning minor damage, to avoid Big Plod's electronic eyes from identifying the car's owner.....

its going to get worse, as more cameras hidden from veiw, it makes it cheaper to clone, old cars are easy to buy, that wonderful website just mentioned !!
Yes, the more they're hidden the more cloning gains respectability amongst a wider circle of people - just like points on the licence. Respect for the law falls ever further.

Liebchen - they live in lah-lah land..usually unable to tell their spin from fact...
.But
I seem to remember reading about these breakable plates longest time ago...given state of roads und road chips which can smash a windscreen ... I can see this being a right farce..
And suppose you actually do need to remove your plates for a legitimate reason.
I'm thinking of fitting auxiliary lamps mounted on bracket made from a plate which bolts behind the number plate. Extra to get a new plate, note that the price is doubled by the Govts plate manufacturer spnsors er lobbyists er friends er hole digging stop.
Suppose I could claim that the old plates were broken due to a wayward shot by some corpulent git on the croquet lawn.
