Police hunt for missing Taser gun

A Taser stun gun was lost by a police officer who is believed to have left it on the roof of his car before driving along country roads in East Sussex. An urgent search is under way for the weapon, which was lost between Lewes and Eastbourne on Monday morning.

"Our priority is to recover the weapon as quickly as possible," said Chief Supt Paul Pearce. "A child could easily mistake it for a toy gun."

The weapon is yellow and black and looks like a plastic hand gun.

Back route

"It could be picked up by a child. The less likely possibility is that it may fall into criminal hands," said Mr Pearce.

The police car left Church Lane, Lewes at 0800 BST and took the back route to Eastbourne via Ringmer, the B2124 via Laughton to Golden Cross, and the A22 to Eastbourne.

"The officer had it when he left Lewes but not when he got to Eastbourne," said a Sussex Police spokesman.

"Obviously there was some human error." (no shit sherlock)

He said the gun should have been stored in pouch inside a wallet in the car.

Police said anyone who found the Taser should not touch it but should dial 999 and wait for the police to come and remove it.

I know I'm not a trained detective...not really a trained anything, but might it not have been prudent just to say that one had gone mising in the county, rather than on a particular road!?!

No worries, speeding fines will help pay for a new one... and the sale of the Tazer on the black market will make someone's day.

Opps, someone is going to get stuck on big-time for that one!

In my previous career renting hire cars to my local force, I found enough kit left in returning vehicles over the years to completely kit me out, including stabbie, cuffs, baton and Captor!

edited to say, obviously I handed all the gear back in a timely fashion, often to red-faced officers...

Not as bad as a friend of mine who had an MP5 left on his dining room table.....

:-)

Allegedly - but I have no reason to disbelieve him.

Given that no-one's handed it in and the nature of the thing that's probably the most likely scenario, although someone might be keeping it for home defence - err wait a minute that would make them a 'criminal' wouldn't it........

You have to ask why was it out of the car in the first place?

Maybe it was used?

Maybe although it doesn't say in the report. It's as well it wasn't a firearm.

Or maybe it stuck in the blokes side when he drove or was dangerous to have jammed between his back/side and the seat when driving, hence he took off his belt or put it on the roof when he unlocked the car to get in.

Lets hope its found. It'll be interesting to see what happens to the officer. I know that in my line of work if I allow anything to get out of the Lab which may in some way endanger the general public that its p45 time, without exception (in the case of pathogens, GM material, radioactive material or dangerous chemicals I'd stand a reasonable chance of facing prosecution).

"Sorry officer - I've lost my shotgun* in the street...I wasn't using it, it was just that it was digging in my back when I was coming home from the hunt. I hope nobody got shot with it in the meantime"

*I have not got, nor ever had a shotgun, nor any other firearm...but this has to be considered a terrible mistake on the part of the officer, the sort that Joe Public might end up getting a stripey tan for making.

Bit like the female firearms officer who left her pistol in the loo at a garage I guess....

I suppose if you are not used to carrying it then leaving it on the roof is easy enough?!?!!?

In class today a couple of my tutors who are former Gatwick firearms officers were telling us a few stories about firearms mishaps, including one officer who left their rifle hanging on the back of the loo door, and another who had accidentally discharged a weapon, also in the loos strangely enough.

As for why the tazer was left on the roof of a patrol car, well, they were heading out at the start of a shift by the sound of it. We've all absent-mindedly left things on car roofs, eh? I lost a perfectly serviceable pair of sunglasses that way once...

When I had a broken leg I left a walking stick on the roof and drove off. It fell off and somebody ran it over, turning it into splinters. I was buggered for a while after that but it was funny. I've also seen cars with a mug of tea on the roof which is quite funny.

The route described is pretty rural (avoids the awful A27 Lewes-Eastbourne stretch). However, I can't see how the Taser even got outside Lewes without sliding off.

The left-hander out of Church Lane should have been enough to shift it, I'd have thought!
