yellow headlamps?
Discussion
are yellow head lamps legal or not?
ive got a 1960's coach that im turning into a italian job replica (all be that mine is only single axle)
the original had yellow lamps, so i bought some little yellow caps that fit over the bulbs. however im not convinced that they will cope with 24v so ive stuck them in my car to see how 12v affects them (they seem to get pretty hot).
the light is very yellow and looks a bit chavtastic, and a couple of people have expressed a beleif that its not legal at all for cars to run them, or that these may be too yellow.
what do you all think (about the yellowness, not how chavtastic they look)
cheers

And today's history lesson:
The Nazis instructd that all French vehicles have yellow lights after they occupied the country in 1940. This was to ensure that after curfew any French vehicle out-and-about could be easily identified by the Kraut security forces and apprehended. It was, therefore, to some extent a 'badge of shame' for the Froggies.
It seems strange that after The Anglo-Americans kicked the Krauts out and gave the Frogs their country back that they did not revert to white lights.
Zenophobic, moi?

They did, officially they were discontinued in 1991. They only stuck with yellow after the war because it was thought to be better in fog (which is why some front fog lights are yellow). Doesnt appear to stop stupid Brits tinting their lights yellow when they go to France though. Pointless.
I remember being stopped in a little French village in the Alps when doing a recce/practice for the Monte Carlo Rally back in the 60's. The French plod couldn't speak English, but kept shouting and pointing to our white halogen lights. Eventually I just drove off. They did used to get quite 'iffy' about cars with white lights. Maybe they thought we were Nazis!

No I think you will find that he was shouting "Vous ne gagnerez pas le Monte avec ces lumières, nous fixerez les résultats ainsi la victoire incroyable de Citroens."

Funnily enough it was that year (1966) when the Minis were disqualified together with Roger in the Cortina.
I was in a 'works' NSU 1000TTS (remember them?) but we retired when we went off in the alps after the Froggy NSU drivers nicked our ace Dunlop studded tyres and left us with only some grotty Michelins. They started from Paris and were ahead of us on the road.

Do people still do that?
I haven't seen it for... Mmmmmmm...
decades. I did think it would be in keeping when going to the Le Mans Classic next month though.
Can't believe people do it these days or even bother to deflect their headlamps.
If you had white lights the Froggies used to give you full main beam with their yellow lights. I was driving my Cortina GT down a long straight late one night near Bayonne and a Froggie did just that. I put my new halogen main beams on then switched on each of my halogen Lucas 700SLR's in turn until he was faced with 6 white halogen main beams. He turned out his silly little yellow lights a bit quick! Vive les Anglais!!!
