Does anyone know why, apparently uniquely, Norfolk Police are the only entity (don't count Clarke) who support these mergers ?

Is it debt sharing ?

Thought Cumbria and Lancashire were going to merge voluntarily, even though put on hold.

What they say and what they think.......

Cambs are strongly opposing the merger. To me it's another example of policing on the cheap from the politicians. In my opinion it's going to make the police even more remote from the ordinary man in the street.

Durham and Northumbria also returned merger plans to time. I think feelings amongst the officers themselves are mixed from what our relative with Durham let slip in conversation with us. Cleveland does not want to join them though and petitioning against it.

GMP, Cheshire and Merseyside reportedly "not happy."

Think I read the Welsh forces not too keen either.

the phrase "turkeys voting for christmas" springs to mind when I have seen most the CC arguing to keep their big fish in small pond status.

I'm told by a "friend" that Lancashire and CUmbria are still aiming to merge by 1 April 2007.

Aren't Durham and Northumbria the best forces in the UK?

Do the 'new' forces created by the mergers map exactly onto the EU Regions that make up England and Wales, or is that just a conspiracy theory?

What I dont understand is the choice of merge:
Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire? WHY?
Most people know car thefts movement of stolen stuff goes DOWN/UP the A12. ie Essex!!

Sorry this is just Stupid, it just shows those in power dont have a clue about whats going on.

See my post above. Pratical policing requirements are not the reason behind the mergers.

I think let's merge some of the forces. Blair is normaly a complete w**nker but he is spot on when he says we are no longer living in the age of dixen of dock green. Just because you centralise the command and control centres doesn't mean you lose local knowledge, it doesn't mean your local cop shop is any more likely to close now or that when you want the BiB they have to travel any further than they do now or your friendly bobby dixen you have known for the last 80 years is going to have to commute 900 miles to a different city every day.
