Every morning on the way into Southampton, I witness "On Time" car transporters display some truly terrible driving. Sometimes its just inconsiderate and poor control (e.g. when they go down The Avenue, straddling both lanes to intentionally preventing passing in the queues, whilst every other transporter company seems to be able to keep to one lane), but often it's downright dangerous! I've almost come a-cropper a couple of times due to them so now give them a very wide berth.

This mornings fun and games was a driver seeing fit to change to the far right lane on a triple carriageway for a right turn (Millbrook Road to West Quay for those who know the area). Indication was only given as the manouever was being made, there was a car almost in line with the back of the trailer unit that had to brake very heavily to avoid being hit and the car in front ended up with a lorry so close to their rear bumper my wife actually braced expecting an impact!!! The woman in the car was clearly frightened by the lorry being so close behind, which didn't pull back until just before some traffic lights.

Usually I have the utmost respect for HGV drivers, but I just cannot fathom how one company can seem to promote such appaling behaviour?

Anywho, what can one really do about this sort of thing?

I forgot to mention, I have actually tried to phone them before (after one of my near misses) and they were... extremely dissinterested to say the least! I got the impression they really didn't care as long as the cars on the trailer got to port and there was no interest from the local BiB.

There's only one reason for this kind of standard; Agencies supplying haulage companies just will not pay their driver's the correct rate. There are some agencies actually advertising for Class 1 drivers at the minimum wage!!
Would you drive 44 tons through heavy traffic for a fiver an hour?
Hence you have the dross in some of these vehicles.

Another issue is that many of these shuttle service car-transporters have NO regular driver are basically operated 24 hours a day. This results in nobody having "ownership" of the vehicle, and thus you might find a tug or two brings several :ahem: maintenance issues :ahem: to light.

Just a thought mungo?
