Hi,
If you are renting out a car in return for cash can you get a short term insurance policy for the hirer?

Or is there a special short term insurnace you can get for this?

Thanks,
William

That's what I thought but there is something about hire and reward, but is that just for taxis?

I surpose one could provide the car for free, but charge heavily for the petrol.

Thanks,
William

If you are hiring out a vehicle to a paying member of public you need to supply insurance for them to drive it, unless they can provide their own. Most private policies specifically exclude coverage on an additional hired vehicle.

A policy taken out by you will be extremely expensive, I'd have thought, given that it will need to cover any Tom, Dick or Harry within reason (age/endorsements).

What are you hiring out?

However they seem to be the only company on the market offering such a service.

Seen these referred to elsewhere:
www.insuredaily.co.uk
www.tempcover.com

but don't know anything about them.

Hi,
Thanks for your replies.

It would be a Morgan 4/4 4 seater.

I would also thinking about the use of it was a wedding car to help with cash as I am a student.
Thanks,
Will

If it's a commercial venture, however infrequent, you're only really going to be able to do it above board, or risk all sorts of legal wrath if it goes awry. For a single vehicle, rented occasionally, I'm sure you'd find it impossible to generate anything other than a huge loss.

If you just want some extra cash to help with running costs, have you considered offering a small part of the ownership to a friend, or maybe smaller parts to several friends? They could then be covered on the same private policy, assist with running costs and as you're just sharing the car, there s no liability on your part. Plus, would you really want to let strangers loose on your pride and joy? Granted, it's probably not going to attract that kind of customer, but still!

Hope that helps

To hire out a vehicle you require a policy covering you as a hirer of vehicles together with public liability insurance and, possibly, professional indemnity insurance.
For wedding hire, with a chauffeur, you need this added to your policy as a specific item of cover. My wife used to have a wedding business, including wedding cars, and we had to add this to our private car insurance for the Rolls and the BMW. There was an additional premium to be paid.
