Discussion
Long time since I was this way but question relates to A14 from M6/M1 across to general area Bury St Edmunds at which point I would branch south easterly direction.
What is A14 like these days for;
a) scamps wielding hair dryers and the like, and
b) camel trains of 40mph club members/ heavies, caravans and their ilk.
I can imagine the answer to a) but re b) my map shows it dualled most of the way, but many of the duals round our neck of the woods have been reduced to one lane each way and 40/50 limits.
Just wondering because I can go another way entirely but I need a trip round the M25 clock and then out along the A12 like a hole in the head. On that day time is not of the essence. Seemed that across country with some B roads towards the end might be preferable if its a nice sunny day.
If its the wrong forum sorry mods.

Scamps, check.
Fixed cams, check.
Elephant racers, check.
It usually runs fairly well from the M6 down to the junction with the A1 apart from around the fixed cam at Kettering and then it slows down once you hit the interchange at Huntingdon. Loads of fixed cams and elephant racers between Huntingdon and Cambridge but once you're passed there it usually opens up a bit. Plenty of scammers on the bridges in the Northamptonshire bit.
Still preferrable to the M25 though.

If it helps at all, we did a run to Stansted and back from Coventry one weekend after easter.
Out was M6 A14 M11, left at 1pm
Back was M11 M25 M1 M6 (with a detour to drop someone off in MK), left before noon
Excluding the MK detour, there was very little difference in the journey times (including the M1 roadworks), and the long-route was actually more relaxing because you weren't looking out for cameras or pratts/elephants holding you up.
Of course, we hit the M25 early-lunch...hit it at the wrong time and all bets are off!

From M6 to the A1 round about on A14 there are only 2 fixed cameras:*
1 at Kettering - blue truvelo
1 just before Keystone - regular yellow truvelo
After A1 round about to Cambridge there are loads of fixed cameras, truvelo and gatso.
The usual place for scamera vans is on the approach to the A1 roundabout. They site in the lay-by about 200yds up from the roundabout.*
As other have said the M6 - A1 section is usually OK and quiet. From the A1 until you pass Cambridge/Newmaket it is pretty much a car park.

Ah thanks for comments guys.
Sounds like as bad burnt as scalded. To use an old expression.
Last time I did the journey was in reverse diection a few weeks back, Shotley Point to home, on a Sunday afternoon in absolutely 'persisting' rain, M25 was a car park. M40 was like power boating but @ 50mph top whack. Seemed to take for ever.
